There Ain’t No Libertarians, Just Politicians Who Want to Give All the Money to the Rich

Source: Beat The Press
by Dean Baker

“David Wallace-Wells had a column discussing the trip by Javier Milei, Argentina’s new president, to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos Switzerland. The WEF forum is an annual gathering of many of the world’s richest people, where they also invite politicians, academics, and others who they think may amuse them. According to Wallace-Wells, Mr. Milei definitely fits into that category. The piece talked about how Milei calls himself as an anarchist, with the government just doing basic functions, like defending the country and running the criminal justice system. Otherwise, Milei would eliminate any role for government, if he had his choice. It is humorous to hear politicians make declarations like this. As a practical matter, almost all of these self-described anarchists would have a very large role for the government.” (03/27/24)

“The people”/personhood paradox

Source: Orange County Register
by Erin M Carr

“Two years after the Dobbs decision, the court now prepares to decide another landmark abortion case made possible precisely because of the unworkable legal landscape created by the overruling of Roe. As the court considers the fate of abortion medication in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, it has become clear which ‘people’ the court seeks to delegate power to determine the precious contours of reproductive health rights. … The ‘people,’ as the post-Dobbs landscape has shown us, is mostly comprised of conservative state judges and legislators who subscribe to a concept of ‘fetal personhood’ in which non-viable fetuses are assigned greater social value and legal rights than the women whose bodies carry them.” (03/27/24)

CA: Feds propose killing nearly 500,000 “invasive” owls to save native ones

Source: SFGate

“A group of 75 animal rights organizations, including several in California, signed a joint letter sent to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on Monday urging her to nix a proposal by the U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife to shoot nearly half a million ‘invasive’ owls over the next 30 years. The goal, according to the plan, is to eliminate habitat competition between barred owls and native northern spotted owl and California spotted owl, two endangered subspecies of spotted owls. While still in its early stages, the proposal calls for shooting an estimated 470,900 barred owls — primarily with shotguns — across land in Washington, Oregon and California over the next 30 years. In their letter, the animal rights groups called the practical elements of the plan ‘unworkable’. ‘This plan will cause severe disruptions to wildlife from the forest floor to its canopies, producing an untold number of mistaken-identity kills of other native owl species (including spotted owls),’ the letter said.” (03/28/24)

Colombia: Regime expels Argentina’s diplomats after Milei calls Petro “terrorist”

Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]

“Colombia has ordered the expulsion of Argentinian diplomats to the Andean nation, with the Colombian foreign ministry citing ‘denigrating’ comments by Argentinian President Javier Milei about Colombian President Gustavo Petro. … Milei called Petro a ‘terrorist,’ ‘murderer’ and ‘communist’ in a recent interview with the CNN broadcaster, which has not yet been aired in full. Libertarian Milei also took swipes at other regional leaders in clips of the interview, including Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.” (03/28/24)

DoorDash & Uber Using Customers as Pawns to Punish Workers

Source: Common Dreams
by Sally Dworak-Fisher

“A mere two months after a series of new protections for certain app-based workers in Seattle took effect, corporations like DoorDash and Uber Eats that had opposed them are trying to destroy them another way: by charging new service fees in order to tank consumer demand and available work. In doing so, these companies manipulate more than just the market. They orchestrate a political backlash in which they seek consumers and workers to join them in denouncing the law as the culprit and clamoring for its repeal. It’s a tactic from a well-worn playbook. As Seattle’s City Council recently recognized in passing the minimum pay law, these corporations ‘often pay app-based workers subminimum wages despite the promise of good wages, flexibility, and accessibility’. Moreover, these digital labor platforms rely disproportionately on Black and Latinx workers to provide the services they offer.” (03/28/24)

Where RFK Jr. Goes From Here

Source: The Atlantic
by John Hendrickson

“Wasn’t Robert F. Kennedy jr. supposed to have flamed out by now? At a rally yesterday in Oakland, California, Kennedy — a lifelong Democrat turned independent — unveiled his 2024 running mate, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan. Kennedy selected Shanahan from a motley crew of reported vice-presidential contenders: Aaron Rodgers, Jesse Ventura, Mike Rowe, Tulsi Gabbard, and the rapper Killer Mike, to name a few. Shanahan is by no means a household name. Yet she could bolster Kennedy’s outsider ticket in three pivotal ways. She’s just 38 years old and may help him appeal to younger voters. Several states require candidates to file a two-person ticket as a ballot-eligibility requirement, so her sheer addition could help move those efforts forward. And, of course, she has money …” (03/27/24)

Ronna McDaniel and MSNBC: Ultimate Schadenfreude?

Source: The Racket
by Matt Taibbi

“Surely this is the funniest media story of the year? The following three things were obvious before MSNBC puked on itself in its public divorce with former RNC chief Ronna McDaniel, but aren’t we glad the network didn’t notice? More later, but briefly: * Maybe you should hire journalists instead of politicians as on-air personalities; * You gush like bukkake-porn actresses when any of your huge stable of fingernail-pulling ex-spooks like John Brennan comes on air, or Iraq war sales-goons like Nicolle Wallace, but Ronna McDaniel is a bridge too far? * You are rolling out ‘ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY’ chyrons in reference to your own hiring decision. Do you know how funny this is? Potsmokers of America, your try-not-to-laugh-challenges: the Chris Hayes react, the Lawrence O’Donnell react, the Joy Ann Reid react, the Morning Joe react… TV hasn’t been this funny since Ren and Stimpy. NBC, keep being you!” (03/28/24)
