Divide and conquer: The government’s propaganda of fear and fake news

Source: Orange County Register
by John Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead

“‘Nothing is real,’ observed John Lennon, and that’s especially true of politics. Much like the fabricated universe in Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show, in which a man’s life is the basis for an elaborately staged television show aimed at selling products and procuring ratings, the political scene in the United States has devolved over the years into a carefully calibrated exercise in how to manipulate, polarize, propagandize and control a population. Take the media circus that is the Donald Trump hush money trial, which panders to the public’s voracious appetite for titillating, soap opera drama, keeping the citizenry distracted, diverted and divided. This is the magic of the reality TV programming that passes for politics today.” (04/24/24)

Hamas releases video of Israeli-American hostage

Source: France 24 [French state media]

“Hamas released a hostage video on Wednesday showing a well-known Israeli-American man who was among scores of people abducted by the militants in the attack that ignited the war in Gaza. The video was the first sign of life of Hersh Goldberg-Polin since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, and its release ignited new protests in Jerusalem calling on the government to do more to secure the captives’ release. In the video, Goldberg-Polin accused Israel’s government of abandoning the people who are being held hostage by Hamas. He also claimed that some 70 captives have been killed in Israel’s bombing campaign. Goldberg-Polin was clearly speaking under duress, and the claim could not be independently verified. It was not clear when the video was made.” (04/25/24)

TikTok legislation sets grave precedent for free speech

Source: Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression
by staff

“President Biden today signed legislation that kickstarts a process to ban TikTok and empowers the president to block other communications platforms used by millions of Americans. By passing this bill into law, Congress has set a grave precedent for free speech by starting the clock on banning TikTok. FIRE opposed nearly identical legislation when it passed the House last month. The law effectively grants the president permanent authority to ban widely used speech platforms with only weak connections to foreign entities. This is a dangerous power for the president to hold over websites and apps that Americans use to exercise their First Amendment rights.” (04/25/24)

Now We Are Supposed to Cheer Government Surveillance?

Source: Brownstone Institute
by Jeffrey A Tucker

“A few weeks ago, the New York Times told us that ‘As It Turns Out, the Deep State Is Pretty Awesome.’ These are the same people who claim that Trump is trying to get rid of democracy. The Deep State is the opposite of democracy, unelected and unaccountable in every way, impervious to elections and the will of the people. Now we have the NYT celebrating this. And the latest bears notice too: ‘Government Surveillance Keeps Us Safe.’ The authors are classic Deep Staters associated with Hillary Clinton and George W. Bush. They assure us that having an Orwellian state is good for us. You can trust them, promise. … These are the people who have rightly warned about government infringements on privacy and free speech for many decades dating way back.” (04/24/24)

AZ: Giuliani, Meadows indicted in fake elector scheme (disgraced former president likely unindicted co-conspirator)

Source: ABC News

“Several former and current key aides to former President Donald Trump appear to be among those charged by the Arizona State Attorney General over their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. They include Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows and former Trump attorney John Eastman — as well Boris Epshteyn, who remains one of Trump’s closest advisers and a current member of his 2024 campaign team. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes also announced charges against 11 named alleged fake electors and seven people whose names are redacted in the filing for their alleged role in efforts to subvert Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state. The charges include fraud, forgery, and conspiracy. ‘Unindicted Coconspirator 1’ in the indictment appears to be Trump as the language of the document says they were involved in a scheme to keep him and former Vice President Mike Pence ‘in office against the will of Arizona’s voters.'” (04/24/24)

The Founders’ Case for a Strong Militia Over Standing Armies

Source: Tenth Amendment Center
by Michael Boldin

“One of the primary reasons the founders wanted a strong militia system with a well-armed general public was to minimize or even eliminate the need for a large, permanent standing army, even in times of peace. Most people in the founding generation were extremely wary of standing armies. They were often referred to as ‘the bane of liberty.’ They knew this from experience. From the standing armies that led to the massacre in Boston, to the gun control scheme that kicked off the war for independence – they lived it firsthand. As colonial resistance to taxes and other policies grew in 1774, the British responded by attempting to disarm the colonists.” (04/25/24)

France: Air traffic control strikes ground flights across Europe

Source: Reuters

“Delays and flight cancellations were set to impact swathes of Europe on Thursday, after authorities failed to reach a deal with some French air traffic control workers to avert a strike. France’s DGAC civil aviation authority said on Wednesday it had asked airlines to cancel 75% of Thursday’s flights at Paris Orly airport, 55% of flights at Paris Charles-De-Gaulle and 65% of flights at Marseille. Air traffic control strikes in France frequently impact travel in Europe, limiting not only flights into France but also across the country’s airspace. Ryanair had warned it would have to cancel over 300 flights, including from Great Britain to Spain or to Italy, as a result of Thursday’s strikes, renewing pressure on European Union officials to place more pressure on France to limit the impact of the labour actions.” (04/25/24)
