Housing, Not Handcuffs: The Moral Response to Homelessness

Source: TomDispatch
by Liz Theoharis & Shailly Gupta Barnes

On April 22nd, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Grants Pass v. Johnson, a case that focuses on whether unhoused (the term that has generally replaced ‘homeless’) people with no indoor shelter options can even pull a blanket around themselves outdoors without being subject to criminal punishment. Before making its way to the Supreme Court on appeal, the Ninth Circuit Court held that municipalities can’t punish involuntarily homeless people for merely living in the place where they are. This is exactly what the city of Grants Pass, Oregon, did when it outlawed resting or sleeping anywhere on public property with so much as a blanket to survive in cold weather, even when no beds in shelters were available. The law makes it impossible for unhoused residents to stay in Grants Pass, effectively forcing them to either move to another city or face endless rounds of punishment.” (05/21/24)

Colombia: Violence intensifies in as FARC holdout group attacks police and military

Source: ABC News

“Violence intensified in southwestern Colombia on Monday when a bomb blast injured six people in the city of Jamundi and an attack by insurgents on a police station in the rural town of Morales left at least two officers dead, according to police. Colombia’s government attributed the attacks to the FARC-EMC a rebel group that broke off from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and refused to sign a 2016 peace deal in which more than 14,000 rebels demobilized.” (05/21/24)

Lionel Robbins On The Logic Of Choice And A Liberal International Order

Source: Cobden Centre
by Dr. Richard M Ebeling

“It is probably not too much of an exaggeration to say that British economist Lionel Robbins (1898-1984) was one of the most influential economists of the last hundred years without most economists, nowadays, being aware of it. This is all because of a relatively short book that he published over 90 years ago, An Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science (1932). His vast knowledge of the history of economic ideas soon became apparent, matched only by his amazing memory of the details of the ideas of almost any old economist that he or I brought up in the conversation.” (05/21/24)

Thailand welcomes the return of trafficked antiquities from New York’s Metropolitan Museum

Source: Newsday

“Thailand’s National Museum hosted a welcome-home ceremony Tuesday for two ancient statues that were illegally trafficked from Thailand by a British collector of antiquities and were returned from the collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The objects (a tall bronze figure called the ‘Standing Shiva’ or ‘Golden Boy’ and a smaller sculpture called ‘Kneeling Female’) are thought to be around 1,000 years old. This most recent repatriation of artwork comes as many museums in the U.S. and Europe reckon with collections that contain objects looted from Asia, Africa and other places during centuries of colonialism or in times of upheaval. The Metropolitan Museum had announced last December that it would return more than a dozen artifacts to Thailand and Cambodia after they were linked to the late Douglas Latchford, an art dealer and collector accused of running a huge antiquities trafficking network out of Southeast Asia.” (05/21/24)

The Vietnamization of Ukraine

Source: Antiwar.com
by Ron Paul

“As Ukraine’s defeat in the war moves closer, the neocons are desperate to draw the US further into the fight. Over the weekend, former US State Department official Victoria Nuland told ABC News that the US must help facilitate Ukrainian missile attacks deep inside Russian territory. The Biden Administration has to this point avoided involvement in such attacks, likely because Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia will strike any facility that supplies or facilitates strikes inside of Russia, wherever they may be. It’s a clear warning from a nuclear power, but as Nuland and her fellow neocons see their Ukraine project failing, they demand escalation.” (05/21/24)

The “Trump Never Conceded” Lie

Source: Town Hall
by Derek Hunter

“Democrats just can’t tell the truth about anything. When reality does you no favors, that should tell you something, shouldn’t it? To Democrats, it does not. They are, after all, the people who created the concept of ‘my truth,’ and other such hippie nonsense people use to justify their mistakes and selfish actions. So, it makes sense that so much of what they insist on, and push regularly against former President Donald Trump would fit neatly into that package. If Donald Trump were even half of the monster they make him out to be they wouldn’t have to lie about him at all, let alone as much as they do. They could simply say, ‘Here’s exactly what he said or did’ and that would be enough.” (05/21/24)

Italy: Naples region rocked by more than 150 quakes

Source: BBC News [UK State Media]

“Homes were evacuated and many schools closed after a flurry of earthquakes hit the area around Naples in southern Italy. More than 160 earthquakes were recorded on Monday evening and overnight. The strongest, of magnitude 4.4, happened around 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) near the town of Pozzuoli. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said it was the strongest quake in the region for 40 years. Gaetano Manfredi, the mayor of Naples, acknowledged that residents may be scared – but said officials were ‘paying attention’. Hundreds of tents were erected in Pozzuoli and some residents stayed on the streets for much of the night, though others opted to stay elsewhere with relatives. Local media reported that several families were considering leaving the area altogether due to the number of low-level quakes that have occurred in the last few months.” (05/21/24)
