Russia: Putin describes secret meeting, plan to take Crimea

"Russian President Vladimir Putin has described a secret meeting with officials last year when Russia decided it would take Crimea -- the Black Sea region that Moscow annexed from Ukraine last March. In a trailer for an upcoming documentary, shown on state-owned television late Sunday, Putin said that he met with security officials in February to make plans for saving Ukraine's then-President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled power after months of pro-European protests in the Ukrainian capital. ... Putin said that after the meeting he told the security chiefs that they would be 'obliged to start working to return Crimea to Russia.'" (03/09/15)

Russia gets $15 million gas payment from Ukraine, cut off averted

March 5, 2015
posted by

Reuters

"Russian gas exporter Gazprom said on Thursday it had received a $15 million prepayment from Ukrainian state energy firm Naftogaz, averting a possible cut in supply, at least for a few days. The money is enough to cover 45.6 million cubic meters of gas, or about five days of supply at current rates of delivery, Gazprom said by e-mail. Gazprom had warned that supply to Kiev could be cut off as soon as Friday if no payment was made. Any possible cuts in gas supplies to Ukraine could have a knock-on effect for the European Union, where Russia meets one third of the fuel demand. Around 40 percent of Russian gas to the EU goes via Ukraine." (03/05/15)

DPR: Ceasefire appears to take hold

euronews [EU]

"A ceasefire in [Donetsk People's Republic] looks like it's finally taking hold, two weeks after the Minsk agreement was signed. Despite refusing to proceed with a military withdrawal until [DPR forces] ceased fire, officials in Kiev have now acknowledged that the frontline is much quieter. Ukrainian commander Victor Sherdluh is waiting for the order to pullback heavy weapons. ... At Donetsk airport which [DPR forces recaptured from invading Ukrainian troops] last month, captured Ukrainian troops have been retrieving bodies of fellow soldiers killed in the fighting. One [DPR] commander said many more bodies were buried under the collapsed terminal building. 'If Ukrainian forces do not attack us, we will remove these bodies and give them to their mothers to bury them. These guys were fighting here, I do not know what for. It was according to the order of their president. They respected that order. So all of us are military and we have to respect our enemy,' said Mikhail Tolstykh." (02/26/15)

Gazprom to Ukraine: No payment, no gas

February 25, 2015

United Press International United Press International

"Russian energy company Gazprom said Tuesday it may halt natural gas deliveries to Ukraine within two days because of late payments. Ukraine's natural gas contract with Gazprom calls for a pre-payment mechanism. Unless a payment registers in the company's account within two days, Gazprom Chief Executive Officer Alexei Miller said the spigot would be closed. ... Gazprom in the winters of 2006, 2009 and 2014 cut gas deliveries through Ukraine briefly in response to contractual disputes with Kiev. That left downstream consumers in Europe short on natural gas supplies. The row sparked concerns from European leaders over the influence Gazprom has over the regional energy markets, leading policymakers to create measures to deter companies from controlling natural resources and transit arteries." The latest libertarian shillery for Russia

"Chris Martenson recently wrote 'What's Really Happening in Ukraine' for the Casey Report. He write that US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt tweeted a 'crudely doctored photo' which attempted to blame the shooting down of MH-17 on the 'Russian backed separatists' (ie Russian mercenaries and military forces). For libertarians like myself who've spent the last decade skeptical and critical about our own government's false flag attacks, this is very intuitively appealing. We're sensitive to government lies and false flags. But Chris Martenson is lying. Shamelessly. He just made this up. Like most Kremlin talking points, this one is designed to help us believe things our intuition wants to believe." (02/22/15)

Ukraine denouement

"The fate of Ukraine is now shifting from the military battlefield back to the arena that counts most: that of international finance. Kiev is broke, having depleted its foreign reserves on waging war that has destroyed its industrial export and coal mining capacity in the Donbass (especially vis-a-vis Russia, which normally has bought 38 percent of Ukraine's exports). Deeply in debt (with €3 billion falling due on December 20 to Russia), Ukraine faces insolvency if the IMF and Europe do not release new loans next month to pay for new imports as well as Russian and foreign bondholders." I don't think there are many 'goods guys' on either side of this fight, and my assumption is that both sides are lying as much as possible. It's a very sad situation, but very few people really knows what's going on. That's why I don't comment on it much. I wish I could say the same thing for United States Senators, you know, the people who actually play an important role in deciding when the country goes to war (that is, when Obama decides to consult them)." Ultra-nationalists went crazy, and apparently one Taras Demyaniv -- who belongs to a 'reenactment' group that idolizes the Galician SS, collaborators with the Nazi occupiers of Ukraine during World War II -- dropped a dime on Kotsaba, who was promptly brought up on charges of 'high treason' and espionage.
