"Syrian soldiers have been shot by security forces after refusing to fire on protesters, witnesses said, as a crackdown on anti-government demonstrations intensified. Syria: Student killed after regime thugs attack protest

"A rare demonstration by hundreds of Syrian university students turned violent Monday when security forces beat up and arrested several protesters who were shouting for freedom and unity as the country's three-week uprising gathered strength despite a government crackdown, witnesses said. One student was killed in the protest, bringing the death toll to well over 170 after more than three week of unrest, activists said. There were conflicting reports about whether the student was shot or beaten to death." (04/11/11)

Syria: Gunfire erupts as army seals city

"Gunfire erupted across a key port city in northern Syria on Sunday hours after the army sealed it off, deploying tanks, setting up checkpoints and cutting communications to area, human rights activists said. Activist Mazen Darwish said security forces appeared to be cracking down on protesters who were gathering in Banias on Sunday. He said at least four tanks were deployed in the city, apparently to protect the oil refinery." (04/10/11)

Lawyer: Syria regime frees some activists while arresting others

"The Syrian government is freeing some activists while arresting hundreds of others in its back-and-forth bid to placate protesters and crush dissent, a human rights lawyer said. Attorney Razan Zaytouni sent CNN a list Sunday naming more than 500 people she said have been arrested since the start of the unrest a couple of weeks ago." (04/04/11)

"The Syrian government says 12 people were killed in violence rocking a seaside Mediterranean city. Syria's state-run news agency said unknown armed elements on Saturday attacked neighborhoods in Latakia, shooting from rooftops and terrorizing people.
