"A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for Chung Yoo-ra, the daughter of President Park Geun-hye's friend, Choi Soon-sil, who is in custody and on trial in an influence-peddling scandal that led parliament to vote to impeach Park. ... "South Korea's President Park Geun-hye has said she has asked parliament to help her find a way to stand down. Ms Park faced growing calls to resign amid an investigation into whether she allowed a long-time friend to influence political decisions for personal gain. She said she would 'leave to parliament everything about my future including shortening of my term,' but did not want to leave a power vacuum. Parliament is due to discuss on Friday whether she should face impeachment." (11/29/16)

"South Korean prosecutors said Sunday that they believed President Park Geun-hye was an accomplice in a corruption scandal that has rocked her administration, in a heavy blow to her fight for political survival. The prosecutors' comments, which came as they indicted a close friend of Park's and two of her former aides, are likely to spur stronger calls for her to step down or be impeached. ... South Korea’s parliament has approved a bill to appoint a special prosecutor, who will take over from state prosecutors and conduct a separate and a more wide-reaching probe. "A humbled South Korean president essentially withdrew her nominee for prime minister Tuesday, marking another setback in her attempts to quell a snowballing corruption scandal. Park Geun-hye had to walk past opposition lawmakers holding signs saying 'step down' to get into the National Assembly Tuesday, when she made a rare visit to see Chung Sye-kyun, the speaker of South Korea's parliament. ... Park is fighting for her political life after it emerged that she had been taking secret advice from a lifelong friend who has no public policy background. The friend, Choi Soon-sil, used her connections to raise millions of dollars for two foundations and allegedly embezzled the money." (11/08/16)

"South Korean prosecutors on Sunday formally arrested two former presidential aides as they bring their investigation over a bizarre political scandal that has engulfed the nation a step closer to President Park Geun-hye. Park has issued consecutive apologies following suspicion that she allowed her longtime friend and daughter of a late cult leader to manipulate power from the shadows. But the apologies did little to assuage simmering public anger, which culminated in the largest anti-government rally in the capital in nearly a year on Saturday when tens of thousands of people demanded that Park step down." "The shadowy woman at the center of President Park Geun-hye's worst political scandal apologized for her 'wrongdoings' on Sunday. Hours later, Park fired her chief of staff and seven other presidential aides in an effort to regain public trust, a day after thousands of South Koreans took to the streets to call for her removal from office. ... Park has been accused of letting Choi [Soon-sil], a private citizen with no security clearance or background in policymaking, advise on crucial state affairs. Choi, 60, has also been accused of using her influence with Park to plant her associates in the government, including the presidential office, and to coerce big businesses to donate millions of dollars each to the two foundations she controls." South Korea: Park apologizes over speech scandal

"South Korea's President Park Geun-hye publicly apologized Tuesday after local media reported that some of her key speeches were informally edited by her former assistant. The apology came a day after the JTBC TV network said that Choi Soon-sil received dozens of speeches before Park delivered them. Choi, the daughter of Park's mentor Choi Tae-min and the former wife of Park's former secretary Chung Yun-hoi, has no government job and might have meddled in state affairs, local media reported."
