Militant strikes and threats of violence have badly hampered a campaign to stamp out polio in Pakistan, which along with Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only countries where the disease remains endemic." Pakistan: Bomb blast kills six regime troops

"A roadside bomb targeting Pakistani troops killed six soldiers on Wednesday in the country's northwest near the Afghan border, a local official said. The explosion also wounded eight soldiers, said government official Javedullah Khan in the district of Hangu, where the incident took place, near the Lower Kurram tribal region. "Two people were killed in northwest Pakistan after gunmen attacked four vehicles carrying NATO supplies for Afghanistan, according to officials. The vehicles came under fire in the Jamrud area of Khyber Agency, one of seven districts that make up Pakistan's semi- autonomous tribal belt. ... "A group of armed men, including two suicide attackers, stormed a court complex in the Pakistani capital on Monday in a rare terror attack in the heart of Islamabad that killed 11 people and wounded dozens. There were conflicting reports on how many attackers were involved in the incident. Initial reports suggested two men wearing explosive vests rushed into the court complex, threw hand grenades and started shooting, then blew themselves up, said Islamabad Police Chief Sikander Hayat." "The provincial government in Pakistan's northwest state of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has said it has ended a more than three-month blockade of a NATO supply route to Afghanistan over contentious US drone strikes in the country, citing change in policy, Aljazeera reported. Until Thursday, the Tehreek-e-Insaf party, led by cricketer turned politician Imran Khan, had been blocking the route to pressure Washington to end drone attacks targeting armed groups in the region bordering Afghanistan. Khan himself has led these protests and has been a vocal critic of drone attacks in Pakistan. In a statement, Khan's party said it ended the protest after seeing a change in the US drone policy." "Pakistan's army continued airstrikes Tuesday against alleged terrorist hideouts in the country's north, a week after the government announced peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban had broken down. In a prepared statement, the military said the strikes may have killed dozens. 'Reportedly 30 terrorists were killed in early morning air strikes on militants' hideouts ...' it read. "The president of the Ittehad Ulema Afghanistan, Maulana Sheikh Abdullah Zakiri, was gunned down [in Quetta] on Wednesday. According to sources, he was playing an important role for initiating negotiations between the Taliban and Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government. Men on a motorcycle opened fire on his car on Sabzal Road, police said. 'Maulana Zakiri was hit by a bullet in his chest,' hospital sources said. He was around 84." (01/30/14)

"Alert security guards at an imambargah [in Karachi] on Tuesday foiled an attempt by two burqa-clad woman suicide bombers by killing one and injuring another. One of the women was shot dead whereas the other was critically injured as the guards at the imambargah or Shia prayer hall, opened fire on them.
