"President Obama was served with a subpoena to appear in an Atlanta court on January 26, to offer proof of his eligibility to be on the ballot in Georgia in the upcoming presidential election. Georgia law, as I understand it, requires that all candidates for federal office be qualified to hold the office to which they aspire." (01/30/12)

"Birtherism is (was?) fundamentally about delegitimizing Barack Obama — proving him a complete fraud. (It's been hard not to assume there was a racial component to the endeavor.) Yet the birthers, dependent on conspiracy theories, were easily done in by basic facts. Seen as reality-denying extremists, the birthers became a drag upon the GOP; only Donald Trump would embrace them fully — and that hardly turned out well. Yet otherism continues and thrives. "Because of the mainstreaming of this exceptionally boring conspiracy theory, an increasing number of Americans were willing to believe that President Obama might have been born in Kenya, or that his book was actually written by a not-particularly-clever ex-member of the Weather Underground (something Sarah Palin also intimated in recent interviews). But was it enough of a groundswell to matter; to effect Obama’s chances at serving a second term? Well, no. And if it were, why not wait until election time, drawing more and more mainstream Republicans into the patently idiotic Kenyan conspiracy, and then dropping the 'long form' certificate when it would have a bigger political impact?" But the president did refer to 'sideshows and carnival barkers.' And records released by the White House show that it was not until last week that a lawyer for the president sent an official request to the Hawaii Department of Health requesting that the department make an exception and release to the White House a copy of the long-form certificate registering Obama's birth." "The governor of Arizona has vetoed a bill requiring presidential candidates to prove US citizenship in order to get on the state's election ballot. Republican Jan Brewer said the bill would have allowed officials to judge who is eligible to run for office. A lingering 'birther' conspiracy theory asserts US President Barack Obama was not born in the US and is thus ineligible to hold the office. But the bill's Republican backers insisted it was not aimed at Mr Obama. The Arizona legislature was the first to pass such a law." (04/18/11)

AZ: Bill requires candidates to prove birth in US

"Arizona, which has shown little reluctance in bucking the federal government, is again plowing controversial ground, this time as its Legislature passed a bill to require President Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before their names can appear on the state’s ballot. If Governor Jan Brewer signs the proposal into law, Arizona would be the first state to pass such a requirement — potentially forcing a court to decide whether the president’s birth certificate is enough to prove he can legally run for reelection. Hawaii officials have certified Obama was born in that state, but so-called birthers have demanded more proof." (04/17/11)
