Birther claim: Obama will be overthrown Nov. 19

September 26, 2013

Raw Story

"A conservative activist who’s repeatedly called for the overthrow of President Barack Obama has set a date for when he thinks that might happen. Judicial Watch founder Larry Klayman wrote Monday that the president had been indicted Sept. 18 by a citizens grand jury in Ocala, Fla., and convicted by a people’s court of defrauding voters by using a false birth certificate to prove his eligibility for office. Klayman said Obama waived his right to a jury trial by failing to plead a response to the indictment, thus 'thumbing his nose at We The People.'" The Birther distraction only benefits Obama

"This is precisely the kind of issue President Obama wants to be a part of this campaign. If the media and the people are talking about the birther question, they are not talking about his failed economic policies, his continued assaults on free market capitalism, ObamaCare, signing extensions to the Patriot Act, signing the NDAA, Fast and Furious, his drug war hypocrisy, his foreign policy befitting that of a warlord, his very Orwellian change in the definition of the term 'civilian' to make his statistics for killings of innocent people in foreign lands not look so bad to the casual news consumer, and etc. In other words, Obama’s record as president!" AZ: Idiot pols climb back on board Arpaio’s birther bandwagon

"Arizona officials have jumped back into the debunked birther controversy over President Barack Obama's birth certificate and his eligibility to hold office, endorsing a proposal that requires presidential candidates to swear that they meet the qualifications of the nation's highest office. ... The widely-disproved notion that the president was born abroad rather than in Hawaii, as state officials have repeatedly confirmed, comes up regularly in Arizona. Most recently, the man known as 'America's Toughest Sheriff' released a report from a volunteer posse challenging the authenticity of the president's birth certificate." (03/15/12)

Birtherism is dead. Long live otherism.

"Birtherism is (was?) fundamentally about delegitimizing Barack Obama — proving him a complete fraud. (It's been hard not to assume there was a racial component to the endeavor.) Yet the birthers, dependent on conspiracy theories, were easily done in by basic facts. Seen as reality-denying extremists, the birthers became a drag upon the GOP; only Donald Trump would embrace them fully — and that hardly turned out well. Yet otherism continues and thrives. This line of attack is far more in sync with routine political practices." (05/19/11)

Birthers and the politics of the shameless

The San Francisco Chronicle

"Are the birthers dangerous, wacky, or simply distracting? President Obama has chosen the third option. His press conference in which he released his long form birth certificate was an exercise in tut-tutting. Acting the part of adult-in-chief, he reproached the press for indulging in the 'silliness' of promoting the birther issue over serious challenges like the national debt and dealing with entitlements. No doubt he realizes that the lecture was futile. ... But there may be a serious undertone to raising the ceiling on shamelessness." (05/02/11)

Why birtherism is here to stay

"On Oct. 22, 1844, thousands of followers of American evangelist William Miller woke up expecting Jesus Christ to make his triumphant return that day, as they had been told. That night, they went to bed, surprised and disappointed. But Miller's movement endured. It was too much to expect that birthers, presented with President Barack Obama's birth certificate, would say: 'What surprising and wonderful news! We'll have to reassess our entire opinion of him.' When it comes to matters of blind faith, cherished beliefs have a way of overriding facts." (05/02/11)

Ending the birther debate

"Because of the mainstreaming of this exceptionally boring conspiracy theory, an increasing number of Americans were willing to believe that President Obama might have been born in Kenya, or that his book was actually written by a not-particularly-clever ex-member of the Weather Underground (something Sarah Palin also intimated in recent interviews). But was it enough of a groundswell to matter; to effect Obama’s chances at serving a second term? Well, no. And if it were, why not wait until election time, drawing more and more mainstream Republicans into the patently idiotic Kenyan conspiracy, and then dropping the 'long form' certificate when it would have a bigger political impact?" Why did Obama take on the birthers?

April 27, 2011

Mother Jones
by David Corn

"Why did Obama finally play the ultimate card? In his statement, Obama did not refer to celebrity developer Donald Trump, who in recent weeks has made birtherism a core component of his presidential campaign flirtation. But the president did refer to 'sideshows and carnival barkers.' And records released by the White House show that it was not until last week that a lawyer for the president sent an official request to the Hawaii Department of Health requesting that the department make an exception and release to the White House a copy of the long-form certificate registering Obama's birth." AZ: Brewer vetoes “birther” bill

April 18, 2011
posted by

BBC News [UK]

"The governor of Arizona has vetoed a bill requiring presidential candidates to prove US citizenship in order to get on the state's election ballot. Republican Jan Brewer said the bill would have allowed officials to judge who is eligible to run for office. A lingering 'birther' conspiracy theory asserts US President Barack Obama was not born in the US and is thus ineligible to hold the office. But the bill's Republican backers insisted it was not aimed at Mr Obama. The Arizona legislature was the first to pass such a law." (04/18/11)

AZ: Bill requires candidates to prove birth in US

April 17, 2011
posted by

Associated Press

"Arizona, which has shown little reluctance in bucking the federal government, is again plowing controversial ground, this time as its Legislature passed a bill to require President Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before their names can appear on the state’s ballot. If Governor Jan Brewer signs the proposal into law, Arizona would be the first state to pass such a requirement — potentially forcing a court to decide whether the president’s birth certificate is enough to prove he can legally run for reelection. Hawaii officials have certified Obama was born in that state, but so-called birthers have demanded more proof." (04/17/11)
