YouTube blocks North Korean channel to appease US regime censors

December 14, 2016
posted by

The Washington Post Washington Post

YouTube has blocked North Korea's state television channel, which broadcasts news on everything from nuclear tests to Kim Jong Un's outings, to avoid breaching U.S. sanctions against the regime. The action was apparently taken not because of the content in the channel but because the North Korean government could earn money from it through advertising. ... Under sanctions imposed in March, the Treasury Department designated North Korea's Propaganda and Agitation Department as engaging in censorship on behalf of authorities. The measures ban any U.S. company or person from doing business with the department." "A South Korean military source says it has identified the source of North Korea cyberattacks that targeted the internal networks of the military. The Internet Protocol address linked to the attacks was traced to a location in Shenyang, China, and a malicious code associated with the address was similar to the one used in North Korean cyberattacks against the South, Yonhap reported. Seoul's military believes the evidence points to North Korean involvement in a hacking incident aimed at the army's intranet." (12/06/16)

North Korea: Regime claims successful ground test of new rocket engine

"North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen a ground test of a new rocket engine and ordered a satellite launch preparation, state media said Tuesday, an indication the country might soon conduct a prohibited long-range rocket launch. The United Nations and others view the North's space launch development project as a cover for tests of missile technology, as ballistic missiles and rockets in satellite launches share similar bodies, engines and other technology. North Korea is also openly working on developing nuclear-armed missiles capable of striking the U.S. mainland." (09/20/16)

South Korea can afford its own defense

August 29, 2016

"Under a cost-sharing pact, the South Koreans currently pay about 40 percent of the costs of keeping U.S. forces in their country. However, South Korea isn't paying a nickel of the estimated $1.6 billion cost of the THAAD battery; all it will do is provide the land and build a base. But there is no reason that South Korea can't pay for its THAAD battery -- or batteries, as officials there have previously said they want two -- by itself. Indeed, there is no reason South Korea can't handle its own defense entirely, obviating the need for the 28,500 U.S. troops currently on the Korean peninsula." (08/29/16)

South Korea: RoK, US troops start drills as Pyongyang regime threatens nuke attacks

"South Korea and the United States began annual military drills Monday despite North Korea's threat of nuclear strikes in response to the exercises that it calls an invasion rehearsal. South Korea: North Korean regime’s deputy ambassador to UK defects

North Korea maintains relatively few overseas embassies, and defections by diplomats of Thae's stature are extremely rare. 'They are 0-4' one official said describing North Korea's most recent missile launch attempts. The failures could help calm recent fears that the North was pushing quickly toward its goal of a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the United States." (05/31/16)

Donald Trump wants to talk to Kim Jong-Un. Is that really so bad?

"No surprise, Trump's proposal to talk is controversial. The Bush administration's Michael Green called a Kim-Trump meeting 'a very bad idea.' Green complained that Kim won't negotiate away his nukes, but that actually is a reason to establish bilateral contact. Green also worried that addressing the North would reduce the confidence of South Korea and Japan in America's nuclear umbrella. However, the prospect of U.S. allies going nuclear might encourage Pyongyang to deal and China to take a harder line toward the North." (05/19/16)

Seoul: Senior North Korean military officer defects to South

April 11, 2016

Newser

"A colonel from North Korea's military spy agency fled to South Korea last year in an unusual case of a senior-level defection, Seoul officials said Monday. The announcement came three days after Seoul revealed that 13 North Koreans working at the same restaurant in a foreign country had defected to the South. It was the largest group defection since Kim Jong Un, North Korea's young leader, took power in late 2011. South Korean media reported that the restaurant is located in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo. Defections are a bitter source of contention between the rival Koreas, and Seoul doesn't always make the high-profile cases public. Liberal lawmakers and media outlets have linked the recent defection announcements to what they say is an attempt by the conservative government of South Korean President Park Geun-hye to muster anti-Pyongyang votes ahead of this week's parliamentary elections. The government denied this." (04/11/16)
