Jerusalem: Israeli regime re-abducts Arab hunger striker

September 16, 2015
posted by

Greenfield Daily Reporter

"A Palestinian [Arab] prisoner who nearly died during a 66-day hunger strike resumed his protest Wednesday after he was re-arrested following his release from an Israeli hospital. The move sparked renewed Palestinian [Arab] outrage after days of unrest at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site and a spurt of violence that killed an Israeli motorist on the Jewish New Year. ... Supporters of Mohammed Allan said he was detained in a hospital courtyard in the southern city of Ashkelon just moments after being discharged. Allan had been hospitalized for the past month after suffering brain damage and other health issues during his hunger strike. ... Allan staged the hunger strike to protest Israel's controversial practice of 'administrative detention,' which allows it to hold suspected militants without charge for months at a time." (09/16/15)

The battle over BDS

Bibi’s bombast bamboozles Boehner

"At a news conference the other day, House Speaker John Boehner took up his role as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's pro bono publicist by announcing that 'a majority of Congress' opposes the Iran deal. You could almost hear the laughter emanating from the White House as the Speaker underscored his own irrelevance. The uproar surrounding the Vienna accord signed by the P5+1 and Iran has reached such heights that it's become mere background noise: it's like we bought a house next to a freeway and quickly inured ourselves to the racket. After all, how seriously are we supposed to take Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's loud hysterics?" (07/17/15)

The troubling implications of Hillary Clinton’s anti-BDS letter

"On July 2, former secretary of state and frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination Hillary Clinton wrote a letter to Israeli-American billionaire Haim Saban, a strong supporter of the right-wing Netanyahu government, denouncing human rights activists who support boycott/divestment/sanctions (BDS) against the Israeli occupation. In the letter, made public a few days later, Clinton made a number of statements which are not only demonstrably false but raise serious concerns regarding what kind of policies she would pursue as president." Hasbara industry: Why Israel’s army of spin doctors is doomed to defeat

"For years the Israeli government has relied on paid workers -- and thousands of volunteers in Israel and abroad -- to surf the net posting pro-Israel comments. At Israel's international airport, Israeli holidaymakers are offered brochures explaining the importance of persuading those they meet that Israel is misunderstood. Advice suggests emphasising successes such as Israel's invention of drip irrigation and popular varieties of the cherry tomato. And yet the latest hasbara drive is as unlikely to reverse Israel's slow slide into ignominy as its predecessors. The hasbara industry's chief flaw, as Israeli political scientist Neve Gordon observes, is its assumption that 'the merchandise is fine, and only the packaging needs to be replaced.'" (07/07/15)

"Gandhi forced a seemingly unassailable imperial occupying power to pull up stakes and go home. And he did it through nonviolence. It could also expose Israel's denial of basic human rights to many of the Palestinians under its control. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and numerous other friends of Israel have essentially declared war on the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS), which one might describe as the Palestinian version of Gandhi, as it is nonviolent and nonconfrontational." "This has become a familiar pattern with the Obama administration. It will make some noises about possibly taking a tougher line with Israel, it will have a few officials make anonymous threats in the press, and when it comes time to do something that might actually inconvenience or annoy the Israeli government the administration balks and backs Israel's position. The fact that the administration typically backs down and yields to the preferences of a client government doesn't win it any goodwill or cooperation from that government on other issues. It does tell the client government that it doesn't have to worry about any consequences for its blatant and public efforts to derail a major U.S. diplomatic initiative." (05/26/15)

Religious fanaticism is a huge factor in Americans’ support for Israel

"It is inconceivable that a substantial portion of Americans would want to support any other foreign country even where doing so was contrary to U.S. interests. Only Israel commands anything near that level of devoted, self-sacrificing fervor on the part of Americans. So it's certainly worth asking what accounts for this bizarre aspect of American public opinion. The answer should make everyone quite uncomfortable: it's religious fanaticism. The U.S. media loves to mock adversary nations, especially Muslim ones, for being driven by religious extremism, but that is undeniably a major factor, arguably the most significant one, in explaining fervent support for Israel among the American populace." The real nuclear threat in the Middle East

"To get a sense of how badly the regime in Iran wants sanctions relief for the Iranian people, you have to do more than contemplate the major concessions it has made in negotiations with the United States and the rest of the P5+1. Not only is Iran willing to dismantle a major part of its peaceful civilian nuclear program, to submit to the most intrusive inspects, to redesign a reactor, to eliminate two-thirds of its centrifuges, to get rid of much of its enriched uranium, and to limit nuclear research -- it must do all this while being harangued by the nuclear monopolist of the Middle East -- Israel -- which remains, unlike Iran, a nonsigner of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and faces no inspections or limits on its production of nuclear weapons. This is something out of Alice in Wonderland." (04/08/15)
