Israel: Olmert starts 19-month jail sentence

February 15, 2016
posted by

The Washington Post Washington Post

"Hours before he went to jail on Monday, former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert released a home-made video protesting his innocence and maintaining that he had never taken bribes while serving in public office. He then left his spacious villa in the Jerusalem hills, escorted by his security detail and trailed by news photographers, and entered Maasiyahu Prison in nearby Ramle to begin serving his 19-month sentence. His drive to jail was carried live on Israeli television. Olmert is the first Israeli prime minister to spend time behind bars, a fact that commentators here acknowledged with a mix of both pride and shame." (02/15/16)

Israel: Two Israeli teens sentenced in Arab teen’s murder

February 4, 2016
posted by

Bryan-College Station Eagle

"An Israeli court on Thursday sentenced two Israeli minors for the murder of a 16-year-old Palestinian in 2014, sending one to life in prison for a crime that provoked deep soul-searching in Israel and was one of a series of events that led to the Gaza war later that year. The court sentenced a second Israeli teenager, believed to have had a lesser role in the crime, to 21 years in prison. Another Israeli defendant is awaiting his verdict following a psychological examination. The three Israelis snatched Palestinian teen Mohammed Abu Khdeir from an east Jerusalem neighborhood in July 2014, driving him to a nearby forest and then burning him to death." (02/04/16)

US Senate: Cotton introduces bill to legalize false labeling

"U.S. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK) introduced legislation on Monday, Feb. 1, that would undo a regulation recently re-issued by the Obama administration that would ban the right to label any goods produced [in non-Israeli Arab areas illegally occupied by Israel] as made in Israel. The JewishPress.com reported last week that U.S. Custom and Border Protection re-issued a 1997 regulation -- written at a very different time, under very different circumstances -- which the State Department insisted it will now 'strictly enforce.' The original regulation was issued in 1997." (02/02/16)

Why the US spies on Netanyahu

"Obama was not eavesdropping on American legislators -- he was working against a foreign country that was actively spying against the United States and using the information it obtained to interfere with U.S. policy formulation. That was more than sufficient reason to try to find out what Netanyahu was up to. The fact that he was talking to congressmen in an attempt to line them up against the White House is deplorable, but if the congressmen did not exchange classified information with the Israelis then their consciences should be more or less clear, if not completely untroubled." In its ruling, the court overturned the main bribery charge against Olmert but upheld a lesser charge. The 70-year-old ex-premier was ordered to begin serving his sentence on Feb. 15. Israel: Regime suspends EU role in “peace process” over truth-in-labeling requirements

"Israel has said it is suspending contact with EU officials involved in peace efforts with the Palestinians. The move follows the bloc's decision to label goods from Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 'ordered suspension of diplomatic contacts with the institutions of the European Union on this issue,' a foreign ministry statement said. ... Just over two weeks ago the European Commission issued new guidelines for the labelling of some products made in Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian and Syrian land. The guidelines stipulate that agricultural produce and cosmetics sold in EU member states must have clear labels showing their place of origin. Israel: Regime denounces EU label rules for products made in squats

The Washington Post Washington Post

"The European Union set new guidelines Wednesday requiring that Jewish settlements [sic] clearly label export products as coming from occupied territories. Israeli leaders condemned the move as discriminatory and warned that relations with their nation's biggest trading partner could suffer. The measures, issued by the European Commission, mean that farmers, vintners and manufacturers in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Golan Heights -- even those employing Palestinian [Arab] workers -- may no longer boast a 'Made in Israel' label for Europe-bound goods. Instead, they must tell consumers that the products come from a 'settlement' in the territories, which were captured by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war." Palestine’s intifada: The process of liberation is irresistible

"Yes, there is violence in the streets. It is the violence that fixates the viewer. Its context is set aside. Why are they using knives or why do they throw stones -- that is the horizon of the question. The Western media is always surprised by the paroxysm of violence from the Palestinians -- why do they resist? There is no parallel perplexity when Israel bombs Gaza and kills thousands or when Israeli bulldozers and helicopters target the homes of innocent families in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The bewilderment is uneven. Yes, there is violence in the streets, but it is not the only violence." (10/19/15)

Abbas to UN: Israel undermines US peace effort
