UN chief criticizes Gaza blockade after Israel-Turkey deal

June 28, 2016
posted by

The Washington Post Washington Post

"The U.N. chief on Tuesday criticized Israel's blockade of Gaza, a day after Israel and Turkey reached a broad reconciliation pact that looked to ease, but not eliminate, the isolation of the coastal strip. In a visit to the region, which included a stop at a Gaza school, Ban Ki-moon bemoaned the plight of Gazans, saying that 'the closure of Gaza suffocates its people, stifles its economy and impedes reconstruction efforts.' 'It's a collective punishment for which there must be accountability,' the secretary-general added. Meanwhile, in low-key affairs, Israel and Turkey formalized their agreement to restore full diplomatic relations after six years of animosity between the once-close allies. ... The agreement with Israel will include an exchange of ambassadors and Israeli compensation for the [murders] of 10 Turkish citizens [and one American] from a 2010 Israeli [pirate] raid on an activist flotilla that aimed to breach the Gaza blockade." Israel: Netanyahu asks Lieberman to be defence minister in shock move

The prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, is attempting to enlarge his precarious coalition, which has a majority of one. Israel: Regime to reopen second crossing for trucks into Gaza

May 2, 2016

"Israel plans to reopen a second border point for commercial traffic into the Gaza Strip, an official said on Monday, a step in gradually easing the blockade imposed on the Palestinian enclave since 2007. The decision to allow trucks through the Erez terminal, on Gaza's northeastern tip, was taken in recognition that a truce that ended the 2014 war against Hamas is holding, the official said. Israel says its blockade prevents the movement of militants and stops construction materials that could be used by Hamas to make bunkers and tunnels. Palestinians there say they are under siege and are unable to rebuild homes destroyed by Israeli bombing." (05/02/16)

The Israel lobby’s totalitarian agenda: Smash free speech and criminalize resistance

by Max Blumenthal

[W]ith the Iran nuclear deal ratified, the peace process in shambles and the Green Line that was supposed to separate Israel from a future Palestinian state fully erased by a settlement movement that dominates the Israeli government, AIPAC is moving to destroy the last line of resistance. From Washington to Paris to London, Israel lobbyists are extracting ritual denunciations of BDS from its political hand puppets and authoring new laws to forbid its implementation. Repressive legislative efforts are accompanied by legal subterfuge, high-tech sabotage, McCarthy-style online blacklists and carefully orchestrated smear campaigns against anyone who resists. No target is too small. With guidance from Jerusalem, where the most right-wing government in Israeli history is mounting an all-out assault on internal dissent, the lobby has embraced a totalitarian agenda that aims for nothing less than the criminalization of all political opposition." Secret mission brings Yemen’s Jews to Israel

March 21, 2016

CBS News CBS News

"Nineteen Jews from war-torn Yemen have been brought to Israel in a covert operation, completing, according to Israeli immigration officials, the repatriation of the 2,000-year-old Yemenite Jewish community. Some 50,000 Yemenite Jews have immigrated to Israel since 1949. Only 50 remain in Yemen, by choice. Among the new arrivals Monday was a rabbi carrying a 500-year-old Torah scroll. Most Yemenite Jews moved to Israel after it became a state in 1948 because of increasing Arab antagonism over the establishment of the Jewish nation. Things took a turn for the worse for the remaining Yemenite Jews after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels took control of the capital city, Sanaa, in 2014." (03/21/16)

UK: Regime to ban boycotts on Israeli goods

It will unveil rules later this week that will make it harder for local town halls and public universities to enact boycotts on Israeli products, spurred by growing popular anger around the collapse of the Middle East peace process. Israeli officials have watched with dismay how the BDS movement (or 'boycott divestment sanctions') has gained a foothold in parts of Europe.
