Israel: Knesset suspends dress code after protest

posted by

Haaretz [Israel]

"The Knesset dress code will not be enforced until a new one is penned in agreement with all those involved, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and a group of lawmakers decided Wednesday after a stormy meeting. The MKs objected to Knesset guards denying entry to 10 female parliamentary aides after alleging that their attire didn't meet the building's dress code. The women were among 40 Knesset staffers who deliberately wore short dresses and skirts to protest the delays their peers encountered while trying to entering the building over the past week on grounds that their hemlines were too high." Palestine: Israeli squatters reject relocation offer as eviction looms

December 15, 2016
posted by

Daily Mail [UK]

"Residents of a wildcat Jewish settlement [sic] in the occupied West Bank on Thursday rejected a proposal to leave voluntarily, raising fears of violence as an evacuation deadline nears. The Amona outpost, home to some 40 families, is under a High Court order to be evacuated by December 25 since it was found to have been built on private Palestinian land in a case that has taken on international importance. The residents' rejection led to concerns the army would move in imminently to clear them out, leading dozens of youths to stream into the hilltop outpost in windy and bitterly cold weather in the middle of the night. ... Several took up position on top of a water tower while waving an Israeli flag. They also hauled an empty dumpster with them for unclear reasons. A spokesman for Amona residents who has lived in the outpost for 14 years said they had not been given any notice of when an evacuation could happen." (12/15/16)

Snowden leaks show GCHQ considered Israel a threat to Middle East peace

"Newly leaked documents revealed that U.K.'s intelligence agency surveilled Israeli military and diplomatic entities from 2008 to 2009, once labeling Tel Aviv as a genuine threat to stability in the Middle East, French daily Le Monde reported Thursday. The extent of the U.K.'s spying on Israel came to light after former National Security Agency employee turned whistleblower Edward Snowden shared top secret documents with The Intercept, an online media outlet dedicated to publishing Snowden's leaks. The files reportedly detailed efforts by the U.K.'s intelligence bureau General Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) to snoop on its ally Israel during the Iranian elections." (12/08/16)

Israel: Bill to legalize [sic] West Bank squats moves through Knesset

"Thirteen suspects were indicted on Wednesday for incitement and possession of firearms during what has been dubbed as the 'wedding of hate,' which saw guests mocking the murder of Palestinian baby Ali Dawabsheh. Among the defendants are five minors aged 14-17, as well as groom Yakir Ashbal from Yad Binyamin. Another defendant is the wedding singer, Sinai Tor from Ramat HaSharon, who sang a song about building the Third Temple, adding lyrics like 'The mosque will burn, burn' and 'The mosque will explode, explode' and is accused of inciting and spurring the guests on with his songs. According to the indictment, right-wing activist Daniel Tzvi Moshe Pinner from Kfar Tapuach danced at the wedding with a rifle, while wearing a shirt of Rabbi Meir Kahane's Kach party that says 'No Arabs, no terror attacks.' Pinner is also facing charges of incitement to racism and support of a terror organization." (10/26/16)

The boat carrying 13 women, including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire, was traveling aboard the Zaytouna-Oliva sailboat in the Mediterranean Sea toward the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave in protest against Israel's security blockade when it was intercepted some 35 nautical miles (65 kilometers) from the Gaza coast [in international waters]." After Peres, is peace possible in the Middle East?

"Shimon Peres was in favor of real negotiations with the Palestinians and he several times inserted himself into the process to urge the hawkish Benjamin Netanyahu to start talking rather than saber rattling. ... Former Jerusalem Post editor Steve Linde wrote a fascinating article last week in his old newspaper detailing a meeting he and the Post's managing editor had with Shimon Peres in 2014. According to Linde, Peres was asked what he thought was his greatest legacy. He replied that he had personally intervened to stop Netanyahu from ordering a preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear sites. Asked by the journalists when they could report this revelation, Peres responded, 'when I'm dead.' So it came to pass last week. How much for the worse things have become in Israeli-Palestinian relations with the passing on of anyone preferring negotiations to violence." (10/03/16)

Decades later, he championed territorial concessions in peace deals with Israel's Arab neighbors -- becoming the vastly more powerful nation's best-known dove abroad. Punishing the messenger: Israel’s war on NGOs takes a worrying turn

"Israel is, no doubt, feeling embattled. Its carefully carved brand -- that it is an oasis of democracy in an arid authoritarian desert -- is now full of holes. Its occupation, wars and siege in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, and the dissemination of images and information about such conduct throughout the Internet and social media platforms is making it impossible for Israel to sustain its official hasbara. Thus, the angry backlash. The Israeli Knesset has been busy passing laws and proposing bills aimed at restricting the work of its own rights groups, or any independent civil society organization that seems, in any way, critical of the government and sympathetic towards the Palestinians." Pollard loses challenge to US parole conditions

Israel to US: “Give us more!”

"Washington is preparing to increase US aid to Israel by billions of dollars, with a ten-year ironclad agreement that couldn’t be altered by President Obama’s successor. But that isn't good enough for Bibi Netanyahu. He wants more. Much more. Unlike the case with other countries, the US engages in protracted and often difficult negotiations with Israel over how much free stuff they’re going to get come budget time. This year, the talks are taking on a particularly urgent tone because of ... you guessed it, Donald Trump. While Trump is fervently pro-Israel, he has said that the Israelis, like our NATO allies, are going to have to start paying for their own defense (although with him, you never know what his position is from one day to the next). This uncertainty has the two parties racing to sign an agreement before President Obama's term is up in January. And it also has inspired the inclusion of a novel clause: a ten-year guarantee that aid will remain at the agreed level, with no possibility that the new President -- whoever that may be -- will lower it." Israel: Knesset passes controversial legislation allowing MP expulsion

"Israel's parliament has passed a controversial law allowing MPs to expel colleagues for incitement, racism or support for armed struggle against the state that critics say is aimed mainly at Arab legislators. The law was passed in the early hours of Wednesday in a stormy and noisy session of the Knesset. Opposition Israeli-Arab MPs said immediately they would appeal against the legislation at the country's supreme court. The passage of the law brings an end to a long running saga over attempts by Israel's rightwing to bring in the legislation, with the prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, saying the law ended 'the absurd situation' whereby someone who 'supports terror against the state of Israel and its citizens' could serve as a member of parliament."
