Donald and Hillary in Plunderland

"Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump represent variations on the same political theme: the interventionist-welfare state, with each pandering to different coalitions of special interests and ideological groups. Both are promising their constituents different varieties of something-for-nothing: for instance, free or heavily subsidized college tuition in Clinton's case and a 'beautiful,' 'huge' wall on the Mexican border in Trump's case. Both promise jobs that are well-paying and secure from the realities of an ever-changing global economy. In their own ways, both promise to make America safe and 'great' again. Even where they seem to differ, their basic tools are the same." (07/18/16)

Degree of certainty: Why Hillary wins

"Donald Trump has picked Mike Pence as his running mate. While I most likely disagree with Pence on most things, he might be a relatively capable Oval Office sitter if Trump wins but resigns in a year to become a judge on America's Got Talent. But that won't happen. Whatever Pence's qualifications may be, the ticket as a whole has a glaring omission: nobody with a Harvard or Yale degree. That means it will lose." (07/15/16)

So reason decided to ask some prominent libertarian and libertarian-leaning figures which candidate offends them more. Unlike [PJ] O'Rourke and [Rand] Paul, the people surveyed below are not making endorsements here -- many will be voting for a third-party candidate or staying home. 'This is very, very unusual. I’ve never signed one, never circulated one to others,' said one retired FBI chief." (07/14/16)

Hillary Clinton’s email absolution: Two parties, one criminal regime

"What was your reaction when you heard FBI Director James Comey announce to the world that the Bureau would not be recommending that charges be filed against Hillary Clinton over her handling of emails while she was Secretary of State? ... Chances are you weren't the least bit surprised that no charges were recommended. But what does that tell you about our political system? That millions of Americans weren't remotely caught off guard by the exculpation of Hillary Clinton is less a commentary about American attitudes than it is a clear indication of the all-pervasive criminality that is at the heart of America's political ruling class. And the fact that such criminality is seen as par for the course demonstrates once again that the rule of law is more a rhetorical veneer than a juridical reality." (07/14/16)

The predictable and pathetic end of Sanders’s “political revolution”

"Bernie Sanders ended his presidential campaign Tuesday, not with a bang but a whimper. The Vermont senator formally endorsed his rival in an undignified prostration before the Democratic Party establishment and Wall Street's favored presidential candidate, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The unity rally featuring Sanders and Clinton in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, had all the spontaneity and enthusiasm of a going-out-of-business sale. The funereal atmosphere was perhaps fitting, because with the demise of the Sanders campaign, the Democratic Party has demonstrated, for the thousandth time, its historical role as the graveyard of progressive movements and efforts to achieve reform through the capitalist two-party system." GOP rips into Lynch, who refuses to discuss details of pre-prosecution pardon for Clinton

"Attorney General Loretta Lynch refused to discuss her decision not to pursue charges against Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, despite intense criticism from House Republicans. Days after FBI Director James Comey testified for nearly five hours in one House committee, Lynch took a markedly different tack before a separate panel. She repeatedly refused to discuss details of the Clinton case, referred matters back to the FBI and at times appeared to go out of her way not even to say the former secretary of State's name, instead referring obliquely to 'the matter.' ... Lynch was thrust into the hot seat following revelations that she had met privately with former President Clinton for 30 minutes on the tarmac at Phoenix's airport. The attorney general maintained that the meeting was purely social and unplanned, but it was seen as compromising her position overseeing the case." (07/12/16)

Democrat Clinton, however, won't face trial and be convicted for her many crimes because Comey, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and the Democrat Obama Administration have refused to prosecute her. And it famously prosecuted Gen. David Petraeus for sharing paper copies of his daily calendar in his guarded home with a military colleague also in the home .... Yet earlier this week, FBI Director James Comey -- knowing that his bosses in the DOJ would accept his legal conclusions about Clinton's failure to keep state secrets secure, because they had removed themselves from independently judging the FBI's work -- told the public that whereas the inadvertence of the above defendants was sufficient to justify their prosecutions, somehow Clinton's repeated recklessness was not." "If I shoot you in the head, the prosecutor isn't going to ask whether or not I read Revised Statute BR-549, Criminal Homicide, and said to myself 'hey, I really like violating laws, I think I'll violate that one today!' He's going to ask whether or not I intended to shoot you in the head. If I did, that was criminal intent because it was an intentional action that happened to violate Revised Statute BR-549. Secretary Clinton and her colleagues didn't accidentally do the things they did. It's not like she and her staff tripped over the dog, got up off the floor and suddenly realized they had inadvertently set up a private email server and illegally conducted sensitive State Department business on and illegally passed classified information through that server. They did those things on purpose and since those things are against the law they clearly had criminal intent in doing them." (07/05/16)
