Ecuador: Regime admits it cut off Assange’s Internet to help Clinton

Ars Technica Ars Technica

"Ecuador, the nation that has granted political asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the country's London embassy, said late Tuesday it had cut off his Internet access. Ecuador says it did this because of WikiLeaks'[s] recent dumps of hacked e-mails surrounding Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. 'The Government of Ecuador respects the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states. It does not interfere in external electoral processes, nor does it favor any particular candidate,' the government said in a statement. 'Accordingly, Ecuador has exercised its sovereign right to temporarily restrict access to some of its private communications network within its Embassy in the United Kingdom. This temporary restriction does not prevent the WikiLeaks organization from carrying out its journalistic activities.' Ecuador, however, said it wasn't revoking the asylum it granted to Assange in 2012." Trump has been criticized repeatedly for his seemingly cozy relationship with Russia. But he says the tension between Putin and President Barack Obama is 'a potentially catastrophic situation.'" Donald Trump has 30%, conservative Evan McMullin has 29%, and Hillary Clinton has 28%. Gary Johnson has collapsed to 5%, with Stein at 1%. For both Clinton and McMullin, it is their best showing in the state in any major poll thus far. 750 likely voters were polled by telephone. The presidential preference question was as follows: 'If the 2016 Presidential Election were held today, would you vote for Republican Donald Trump, Democrat Hillary Clinton, Independent Conservative Evan McMullin, Libertarian Gary Johnson or Green Party candidate Jill Stein?'" FL: Federal judge assails election official’s action as an “undeclared war” on right to vote

The judge also said Detzner's actions amounted to an 'undeclared war' on the right to vote in Florida, the largest swing state in the presidential election. What the Wikileaks emails say about Clinton

"'There is no other Donald Trump,' Hillary Clinton likes to say about her opponent. 'This is it.' The events of the last two weeks -- Trump's two debate performances, the release of his bawdy comments about women in a 2005 video clip, his lashing out against Republicans who are deserting him -- have proven Clinton correct on that count. But the leak of thousands of hacked email exchanges among Clinton's top advisers suggest the same can be said about her -- at least in her role as a public figure. They capture a candidate, and a campaign, that seems in private exactly as cautious, calculating, and politically flexible as they appeared to be in public." (10/12/16)

Trump supporters flee his campaign, will Johnson be the beneficiary?

"Coming off the revelations in yesterday's Washington Post article, Republicans are looking for a place to flee as they distance themselves from Donald Trump. According to the article, which was verified as true by Trump, the Republican candidate boasted, 'And when you're a star they let you do it. Grab them by the p--y. You can do anything.' The video, when taken in culmination with his many insults to women, have put his supporters in a tough spot; whereas they don't want to be seen aligning with him and his comments. So where can Republicans go? Will they suck it up and check his name anyway in the voting booth? Will they go over to Gary Johnson? Will they stay home? Or will they ignore the presidential campaign and vote Republican down the ballot in the November 8, 2016, general election. Perhaps they may follow the many war hawks and neocons who are supporting Hillary Clinton." (10/08/16)

The left’s attacks on Gary Johnson

"Polls have shown that Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson is attracting an extraordinarily large number of votes from millennials and also that he is taking more votes away from Hillary Clinton than from Donald Trump. That has put liberals, including those in the mainstream press, in a quandary. Should they ignore Johnson or should they attack him? After initially deciding to ignore him, liberals have recently changed course and decided to go on the attack, no doubt owing to Johnson's growing support among young people. In my 30 years in the libertarian movement, I have never seen so many op-eds and editorials, especially in the mainstream press, going after the Libertarian Party candidate for president. The attacks on Johnson come in two forms: substantive and silly." (10/07/16)

New York Times attacks Johnson for equating US, Syrian war crimes

"Following an interview with the New York Times, Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson is coming under fire for noting a moral equivalence between killing civilians in airstrikes, and killing civilians in airstrikes. ... While charges of 'moral equivalence' against antiwar candidates are a recurring theme in US elections, they have tended in the past to center around at least moderately different methods of killing civilians, like arguing suicide bombings to be 'worse' than airstrikes. In this case, however, it's difficult to avoid equating the two incidents, since they both involve remarkably similar aircraft dropping remarkably similar ordinance on hospitals run by international aid groups." "Given that Hillary Clinton is unable to use her support of indefinite war in the Middle East and Afghanistan and her commitment to continue the drug war indefinitely, both of which involve continued death, destruction, and corruption, to induce young people to abandon their support of Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson ... what argument is she presenting to young people in the attempt to get them to switch to her? She is using the tried and true method that Democratic (and many Republican) politicians have used ever since the advent of the welfare state in the 1930s. She's offering young people freebies, in this case free college tuition." (10/05/16)

(Johnson, of course, doesn't go far enough. The genuine libertarian position calls for legalizing all drugs, not just marijuana.) Don't forget -- today there are lots of people serving out decades-long jail sentences because people like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump don't believe that people should be free to ingest whatever they choose to ingest and want the state to continue punishing them for ingesting substances that the state doesn't favor. Bill Clinton slams ObamaCare: “It’s the craziest thing in the world”

"Former President Bill Clinton steamrolled President Obama's signature healthcare law as 'the craziest thing in the world.' At a rally on Monday in Flint, Mich., Clinton blasted the core principles of ObamaCare as unworkable as he pitched a new system that would allow people to buy into Medicare or Medicaid. ... Clinton's remarks while campaigning for his wife, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, run in direct contrast to her previous promises to build on ObamaCare. While acknowledging problems like rising drug costs, Hillary Clinton has largely embraced the healthcare law and criticized her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, for his repeated promise to repeal the law. Bill Clinton, whose own attempts at broad healthcare reform failed during his presidency in the 1990s, suggested on Monday that he supported an entirely new approach." (10/04/16)

This year, the Libertarians were initially assumed to be a problem for the Republicans: The ticket consists, after all, of two former Republican governors, Weld and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. For the many GOP voters repulsed by Trump, the Libertarians could be an appealing alternative. A New York Times report late Saturday showed how Trump had used byzantine tax laws to cancel out income taxes after his real estate and casino empire nearly collapsed in the early 1990s, and the Times calculated that the resulting deductions may have allowed him to pay no federal income taxes for 18 years."
