Poised for historic breakthrough, Libertarians stymied time and again by a different kind of spoiler

"Perhaps more than any of the party’s previous presidential nominees, the former two-term governor [Gary Johnson] appears amply prepared to lead his party out of the political wilderness and into a future where libertarianism -- the idea of limited government and maximum individual freedom -- is as widely discussed and debated in political circles as any run-of-the-mill conservative or progressive viewpoint. In Johnson’s world, the cable news networks would have to make room for a third analyst. But Libertarians might be well advised to keep their enthusiasm in check. The party has seemingly been down this road before." (05/02/12)

Gary Johnson for President campaign: The pre-nomination report card

His Education section, however, left me cold." (05/01/12)

Five reasons why conservatives should root for a Romney defeat

"A visionless, rudderless, gaffe-prone presidency is the last thing that Republicans need right now. Having to defend Romney’s slips -- he's insulted 7-Eleven cookies, said he enjoys firing people, and announced he is not concerned about the very poor, and that’s just this year -- will further contort the party’s soul. Four years of Romneyisms, all of which smack of elitism, will cement the image of the GOP as the out-of-touch party of the rich." (05/01/12)

Gary Johnson’s path to 1,000,000 votes: Testing the Dondero approach

Eric supports Mitt Romney for President, but he also has a deep attachment to the Libertarian Party, and seeing the LP crack the million-vote ceiling this year. In a nutshell, Eric proposes that in states where that are already considered 'safe' Romney states, Libertarians and Libertarian-minded Republicans should feel free to cast a strategic vote for the Gary Johnson/Jim Gray ticket.' I said then that the Libertarian Party faces a critical test in 2012 and I want to make sure we're up to the challenge. The Libertarian message in 2012 must be a loud, clear and unequivocal call to stop the wars! Stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, stop the war on drugs and alternative lifestyles, stop the war on civil liberties -- stop all war." (04/28/12)

"In a recent piece, I suggested that Romney would likely win the Republican nomination, and since he has no history of scandals and is obviously intelligent, the Obama campaign (which cannot run on Obama’s record in office, which is risible) would attack him in the only way it can. It will try to attack him for being rich, white, and Mormon. That is, it will try to arouse envy of the rich among the poor, hatred of whites among blacks and Latinos, and anti-Mormon prejudice among the populace at large (and especially among evangelicals)." PA: Two House Democrats defeated in primaries

April 25, 2012
posted by

New York Times

"The defeat of two conservative House Democrats by more liberal opponents in Tuesday’s Pennsylvania primary illustrates the strong hold the new health care law still has over committed Democratic voters and foreshadows an even more polarized Congress next year in the aftermath of the latest round of redistricting. Representatives Jason Altmire and Tim Holden both lost in primaries to opponents who joined together with activist groups to pummel the veteran lawmakers over the opposition to the new health care law and climate change legislation -- positions they had used to their advantage in the past to show their independence from President Obama and the Democratic Party." Wrights the only presidential choice for the party of principle

For 2012, the top two contenders for our nomination are Lee Wrights and former Republican, Gary Johnson. Based on his campaign rhetoric, I’m concerned that if Gary Johnson is our nominee, he will say things as our standard bearer that will cause confusion about the LP brand. That happened in 2008; we don’t need for it to happen two presidential election cycles in a row." (04/16/12)

Romney trying to erase primary extremism
