IA: Pol admits Paul campaign bribed him

Yahoo! News

"A former Iowa state senator who abandoned then-presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to endorse Ron Paul a week before the 2012 Iowa caucuses has pleaded guilty to 'concealing payments' from Paul’s campaign in exchange for his support, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday. In December 2011, state senator Kent Sorenson, then the Iowa chairman for Bachmann’s campaign, made a surprise announcement that he had switched his endorsement to Paul. At the time, Sorenson said he made the decision based on his support for Paul’s policies, but this week he admitted to accepting tens of thousands of dollars from the Paul campaign as part of the deal. According to a DOJ release, 'from October to December 2011, he met and secretly negotiated with a second political campaign to switch his support to that second campaign in exchange for concealed payments that amounted to $73,000.'" The GOP’s phony silver lining

"The Republican National Committee's 'autopsy' of the 2012 election acknowledges some of the failures that resulted in the party losing the national popular vote for the fifth time in the last six races. It also ignores a major reason why the GOP’s base is shrinking. But one particular aspect of the report rings particularly false -- an effort to find a silver lining in the party’s image problem ..." Barr, Sheehan launch write-in initiative

"Peace and Freedom Party presidential nominee Roseanne Barr and Vice-presidential nominee Cindy Sheehan ... are seeking election on a platform of ending wars both abroad (Afghanistan, Syria, etc.) and at home (the war on drugs and the war on civil liberties). The 44-year-old Peace and Freedom Party expanded its ballot access outside of California for the first time in 2008, and voters in California, Colorado and Florida will see the Barr-Sheehan ticket on their ballots next month. Additionally, the campaign has launched a national write-in initiative, and expects to qualify to have write-in votes for Barr-Sheehan counted in 29 states." (10/10/12)

Spiritual Politics 2012

September 26, 2012
posted by

Rational Review

There’s a wonderful spiritual statement about how we focus our attentions: "what you resist, persists." A corollary to this, and the basis of many self-help and other improvement programs, expresses the obverse: since everything material began as a thought, what you focus on now, with all your heart and mind, becomes your future reality.

I believe this principle also applies to political action, and helps explain the basic muddle in which many voters find themselves going into yet another Presidential election involving far less than perfect candidates: very few people are looking forward to November as a time to affirm their beliefs and values. For a large percentage of would-be voters, there is (once again?) only a choice between what they see as a "barely acceptable" candidate and an inherently "evil" one. (Note: I acknowledge that this condition is not universal, and there are some who truly believe in their Republican or Democrat standard-bearer; this essay is addressed to those for whom that allegiance is not so fervent.)

More data on libertarian roots of Tea Party

"Perhaps Paul Ryan moves tea party libertarians more than conservatives. No doubt Romney's famously data-driven campaign tested Ryan's impact on various segments of the electorate. If 2012 becomes a turnout election, Rapaport's data suggests that tea party libertarians and Ron Paul supporters would otherwise be less inclined to turn out and help than conservative tea partiers." Romney’s veep pick proves electoral politics is a fantasy world

"The UK’s Guardian sports a typical 'analysis' headline on Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s selection of US Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) as his running mate: '[F]irebrand from Wisconsin has built reputation on fiscal frugality.' Ryan, writes the Guardian‘s Paul Harris, is 'determined to wield the axe on matters fiscal and slash American government in size.' Other media accounts note his affection for the work of Ayn Rand and jump to the conclusion that he’s some kind of 'libertarian.' These kinds of claims about Ryan should be seen as diagnostic tools. Electoral politics is congenitally afflicted with a dissociative disorder. Its participants, or at least its pundits, clearly lack the capacity to distinguish fantasy from reality." (08/13/12)

Perhaps Johnson’s campaign staff fails to recognize what works for the libertarian minded voters." (08/13/12)

Ask Romney if giving Trump a platform doesn't cheapen what should be a serious debate about the future of the country. Ask Romney why he decided to join a huckster's silly sideshow." (06/01/12)

Republicans have spent so long in ideological hibernation that the only challengers they can field are clones of the Democratic incumbents. And who would choose a clone when you can buy the original?" (for publication 06/12)

Recasting Romney

"During the Republican presidential primary, it was widely regarded that the Tea Party constituency had no love for Governor Romney, preferring candidates such as Governor Rick Perry or Herman Cain. Now that the primary is essentially over, Governor Romney is being recast. Looking at the preliminary Democratic campaign material in support of the reelection of President Obama, there is an attempt to associate Governor Romney with the Tea Party, portray him as an opponent of government-run health care, and strangely enough as radically different from President Obama." The rEVOLution after Paul

"With Congressman Ron Paul’s third presidential run and career coming to an end, what will become of his rEVOLution he inspired? Prior to the 2012 campaign, some suggested that former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson would be the 'next' Ron Paul but with Johnson running as the Libertarian Party nominee after being mistreated by the GOP establishment in the primaries, it appears to me that that bridge has been burned and will likely never be rebuilt. Johnson’s activities in furthering the liberty movement will be done outside the Republican Party. The new heir apparent to lead the rEVOLution appears to be the congressman’s son Sen. Rand Paul."
