How Sarah Palin led the GOP to Donald Trump

"Say what you will about Romney, you would trust him with your wallet or your daughter. Trump? Not a chance. It's not always possible to identify the moment when a journey to destruction began. But in the case of the Republican Party, there is no doubt: Friday, Aug. 29, 2008. That day, presidential nominee John McCain announced that his running mate would be Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. It was a test for McCain and the GOP rank and file. Both failed, and the party has never recovered. The problem is not that Palin was a poor candidate who helped drag the ticket to defeat. The problem is that she was celebrated for qualities that were irrelevant and excused for defects that should have been disqualifying." (03/17/16)

Gary Johnson 2012 Inc.: Mere financial irresponsibility … or criminal fraud?

"In 2012, Gary Johnson ran for president as a Republican and racked up six figures in campaign debt before dropping out of the Republican Party, declaring his candidacy for the Libertarian Party's nomination, and dismissing questions about his campaign debt by assuring Libertarians that that could help him get a government welfare check ("matching funds" from the Federal Elections Commission) to erase that debt. He got the nomination, he got the welfare check, then he ran his general election campaign seven figures into debt -- debt which remains unpaid to this very day -- all while campaigning as the "fiscally responsible" presidential candidate. ... that narrative remains substantially true, except where things are even worse than it makes then sound. Explaining how much worse and why requires a sort of timeline." (03/10/16)

IA: Trial begins for veterans of 2012 Ron Paul campaign

October 13, 2015

The Washington Post Washington Post

"Three figures in the 'liberty movement' built by former representative Ron Paul of Texas will finally go on trial today, nearly four years after an alleged scheme to bribe an Iowa state senator into switching his presidential campaign endorsement. According to the federal indictment, which a grand jury handed down shortly before the first 2016 Republican presidential debate, three figures at the heights of Paul's campaign approached then-State Sen. Kent Sorenson about leaving the campaign of then-Rep. Michele Bachmann. Two of the defendants, Jesse Benton and John Tate, had to step away from the super PAC of Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) in the wake of the indictment. A third defendant, Dimitri Kesari, is simultaneously a suspect in a 2014 burglary at the home of a deceased Ron Paul campaign worker." (10/13/15)

"In a further blow to the fundraising efforts of GOP presidential candidate Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the Justice Department on Wednesday indicted two leaders of his main 'super PAC' on charges stemming from the 2012 campaign of Paul's father, Ron Paul. Jesse R. Benton of Louisville, Ky., and John M. Tate of Virginia were charged with covering up campaign payments to an Iowa state senator to persuade him to abandon his support for then-Rep. Michele Bachmann's 2012 presidential campaign and instead endorse Ron Paul. Benton was also charged with lying about it to the FBI. They are the key people behind America's Liberty Pac, the largest of the outside PACs supporting the Rand Paul 2016 campaign." (08/05/15)

IA: Pol admits Paul campaign bribed him

Yahoo! News

"A former Iowa state senator who abandoned then-presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to endorse Ron Paul a week before the 2012 Iowa caucuses has pleaded guilty to 'concealing payments' from Paul’s campaign in exchange for his support, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday. In December 2011, state senator Kent Sorenson, then the Iowa chairman for Bachmann’s campaign, made a surprise announcement that he had switched his endorsement to Paul. At the time, Sorenson said he made the decision based on his support for Paul’s policies, but this week he admitted to accepting tens of thousands of dollars from the Paul campaign as part of the deal. According to a DOJ release, 'from October to December 2011, he met and secretly negotiated with a second political campaign to switch his support to that second campaign in exchange for concealed payments that amounted to $73,000.'" Spiritual Politics 2012

September 26, 2012

Rational Review

There’s a wonderful spiritual statement about how we focus our attentions: "what you resist, persists." A corollary to this, and the basis of many self-help and other improvement programs, expresses the obverse: since everything material began as a thought, what you focus on now, with all your heart and mind, becomes your future reality.

I believe this principle also applies to political action, and helps explain the basic muddle in which many voters find themselves going into yet another Presidential election involving far less than perfect candidates: very few people are looking forward to November as a time to affirm their beliefs and values. For a large percentage of would-be voters, there is (once again?) only a choice between what they see as a "barely acceptable" candidate and an inherently "evil" one. (Note: I acknowledge that this condition is not universal, and there are some who truly believe in their Republican or Democrat standard-bearer; this essay is addressed to those for whom that allegiance is not so fervent.)

More data on libertarian roots of Tea Party

Romney’s veep pick proves electoral politics is a fantasy world

"The UK’s Guardian sports a typical 'analysis' headline on Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s selection of US Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) as his running mate: '[F]irebrand from Wisconsin has built reputation on fiscal frugality.' Ryan, writes the Guardian‘s Paul Harris, is 'determined to wield the axe on matters fiscal and slash American government in size.' Other media accounts note his affection for the work of Ayn Rand and jump to the conclusion that he’s some kind of 'libertarian.' These kinds of claims about Ryan should be seen as diagnostic tools. Electoral politics is congenitally afflicted with a dissociative disorder. Its participants, or at least its pundits, clearly lack the capacity to distinguish fantasy from reality." (08/13/12)

Recasting Romney

"During the Republican presidential primary, it was widely regarded that the Tea Party constituency had no love for Governor Romney, preferring candidates such as Governor Rick Perry or Herman Cain. Now that the primary is essentially over, Governor Romney is being recast. Looking at the preliminary Democratic campaign material in support of the reelection of President Obama, there is an attempt to associate Governor Romney with the Tea Party, portray him as an opponent of government-run health care, and strangely enough as radically different from President Obama."
