“Rigged election” rhetoric: A dangerous two-way street

Clinton is preemptively positioning herself to accuse a foreign power of rigging -- or at least unduly influencing -- the outcome to her loss. That could lead to fireworks of a nuclear variety." Obama to Trump: Cut out the crybaby crap

"President Obama on Tuesday offered a blunt rebuke to Donald Trump's claim the presidential election will be rigged against him: Stop whining. 'You start whining before the game is even over?' he continued. 'If whenever things are going badly for you and you lose, you start blaming someone else, then you don't have what it takes to be in this job.'" (10/18/16)

Trump says he might meet with Putin

"Donald Trump says if he wins the White House, he might meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin before his inauguration. Trump says in a Monday interview with talk radio host Michael Savage that if he defeats Democrat Hillary Clinton, he could see himself 'meeting with Putin and meeting with Russia prior to the start of the administration.' Trump has been criticized repeatedly for his seemingly cozy relationship with Russia. But he says the tension between Putin and President Barack Obama is 'a potentially catastrophic situation.'" Utah Poll: Independent Evan McMullin ties Trump

October 17, 2016

Fox News

"The poll of likely voters, conducted Saturday and Sunday by Rasmussen Reports shows a sensational result in Utah, where two points separates the top three candidates. Donald Trump has 30%, conservative Evan McMullin has 29%, and Hillary Clinton has 28%. Gary Johnson has collapsed to 5%, with Stein at 1%. For both Clinton and McMullin, it is their best showing in the state in any major poll thus far. 750 likely voters were polled by telephone. The presidential preference question was as follows: 'If the 2016 Presidential Election were held today, would you vote for Republican Donald Trump, Democrat Hillary Clinton, Independent Conservative Evan McMullin, Libertarian Gary Johnson or Green Party candidate Jill Stein?'" Trump will torch the Supreme Court

Many conservatives and libertarians are openly flirting with voting for Donald Trump because they fear ceding control of the Supreme Court to liberals. They reckon that Hillary Clinton's judicial appointments are guaranteed to be awful. Trump, on the other hand, despite all his flaws, has no reason to oppose originalist jurists committed to protecting limited government and constitutional checks and balances. If it were any other candidate, this would be a reasonable argument. But this is Donald J. Trump we are talking about." (10/12/16)

NJ: Atlantic City’s Trump Taj Mahal casino closes

October 10, 2016

Ocean City Patch

"Trump Taj Mahal, one of three Atlantic City casinos Donald Trump owned when his company suffered huge losses and filed for bankruptcy, has officially closed. The casino closed Monday after its workers, including housekeepers, bartenders and bellmen, went on strike beginning July 1, demanding health insurance and pension benefits. ... Trump's company, Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, bought the Taj Mahal in 1988 while it was under construction, largely with junk bonds that carried an incredibly high interest rate. ... As the financial losses piled up, Trump was forced to take his hotels and casino company public. Then, in 2004, the company filed for its third bankruptcy, the terms of which mandated that Trump step away from operating the business and the company be renamed to Trump Entertainment Resorts." Clinton, Trump grump together on TV a second time

Los Angeles Times Los Angeles Times

"Facing a fierce backlash within his own party, Donald Trump sought to rally Republicans to his side Sunday night with a scorching debate attack on Hillary Clinton, suggesting he would seek to criminally prosecute his political foe if elected president. Clinton, standing just a few feet away, responded by saying that a tawdry videotape of Trump boasting about groping women showed his true nature and proved he was resoundingly unfit to serve as commander in chief. The series of acrimonious exchanges, which began moments into the 90-minute session and rarely let up, resulted in the nastiest and most personally vicious presidential debate of modern times." Trump supporters flee his campaign, will Johnson be the beneficiary?

"Coming off the revelations in yesterday's Washington Post article, Republicans are looking for a place to flee as they distance themselves from Donald Trump. According to the article, which was verified as true by Trump, the Republican candidate boasted, 'And when you're a star they let you do it. Grab them by the p--y. You can do anything.' The video, when taken in culmination with his many insults to women, have put his supporters in a tough spot; whereas they don't want to be seen aligning with him and his comments. So where can Republicans go? Will they suck it up and check his name anyway in the voting booth? Will they go over to Gary Johnson? Will they stay home? Or will they ignore the presidential campaign and vote Republican down the ballot in the November 8, 2016, general election. Perhaps they may follow the many war hawks and neocons who are supporting Hillary Clinton." (10/08/16)

Breakfast with Bill Weld

"The question that always haunts third-party tickets is whether they will play spoiler to one of the major parties. This year, the Libertarians were initially assumed to be a problem for the Republicans: The ticket consists, after all, of two former Republican governors, Weld and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. For the many GOP voters repulsed by Trump, the Libertarians could be an appealing alternative. But Johnson and Weld also appear to be drawing votes from Clinton, particularly from young people who prefer their live-and-let-live idealism to her baggage-laden wonkery. This is not the way Weld thinks it ought to be. He believes Clinton is wrong on policy, particularly fiscal and military matters -- but Trump is unthinkable." (10/03/16)

Supporters defend Trump as “genius” with taxes

October 3, 2016

The Washington Post Washington Post

"Donald Trump's campaign, reeling Sunday after a report that the business mogul may not have paid taxes for as many as 18 years after declaring a $916 million loss on his 1995 returns, mounted a vigorous defense by calling the revelation proof of the Republican presidential nominee's 'genius.' A New York Times report late Saturday showed how Trump had used byzantine tax laws to cancel out income taxes after his real estate and casino empire nearly collapsed in the early 1990s, and the Times calculated that the resulting deductions may have allowed him to pay no federal income taxes for 18 years." [editor's note: Since the tax code is written by politicians, it will always benefit members of the political class, including the politically connected wealthy; seems kind of silly to expect Trump in particular to have rejected that benefit - TLK] (10/02/16)

Roll Call: “The deficit debate has disappeared”

"The DC consensus is strongly in favor of unimpeded federal spending. Nevertheless, the Republicans have long kept up the ruse that they're in favor of balancing the budget, cutting the deficit and engaging in 'limited' government. Some have kept up the spending even while cutting taxes. This has only led to back-door tax increases. But that has changed this election. Don't worry, the Republicans haven't decided to actually start cutting the budget after years of lying about it. No, what's different this year is that the Party's presidential nominee -- and hence, much of the Party -- isn't even pretending to be in favor of any real budget cutting or budget balancing." How did we end up with such unpopular candidates?

"You hear the expression 'lesser of two evils' when people talk about how they will vote in November. Poll after poll shows a growing number of voters saying they will vote negatively -- they're against Hillary, so they'll hold their nose and vote Trump, and vice versa. It is also likely a large number of discontented voters will simply stay home on Election Day. Both candidates are among the most unpopular and least trusted in American history. One of them will end up in the White House. How did we get here? Why are the only two mainstream candidates left standing Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump?" (09/27/16)

The real threat to the Constitution is Trump

"Many people in his party have repudiated Trump's comments on race, immigration, Vladimir Putin and more. But among those who support him, there is one decisive, last-resort justification: Trump would appoint conservative Supreme Court justices who would uphold the Constitution, and Hillary Clinton would not. If there is anything clear from his tweets and speeches, it's that he has no more regard for the Constitution than he does for the creditors he stiffed in his many bankruptcies." (09/26/16)

Scrutiny of Trump Foundation deepens

September 21, 2016
posted by

The Hill The Hill

"Donald Trump's campaign is grappling with new allegations that the GOP nominee used his charitable foundation to pay personal expenses. On Tuesday, The Washington Post published tax and legal documents alleging Trump's foundation spent $258,000 to settle lawsuits that involved Trump's for-profit businesses. The latest allegation comes after Trump's foundation was found to have made an improper $25,000 donation to a group supporting Florida's Attorney General Pam Bondi (R). That donation came at the same time her office was considering whether to investigate a fraud lawsuit against Trump University. The Republican also reportedly used foundation money to buy two portraits of himself. The scrutiny of Trump’s foundation is deepening at a time when Hillary Clinton is facing allegations from Republicans that the Clinton Foundation was running a corrupt 'pay-to-play' operation while she was secretary of State. The issue could come up during Monday's first presidential debate." (09/20/16)

Trumpism is the symptom of a gravely ill Constitution

"In less than two months, the American experiment in constitutional self-government may hit the wall of history. Even if the disaster of a Trump presidency is averted, this fall's presidential campaign suggests that the United States Constitution is gravely, perhaps terminally, ill. Trumpism is the symptom, not the cause, of the malaise. I think we have for some time been living in the post-Constitution era. America's fundamental law remains and will remain important as a source of litigation. But the nation seems to have turned away from a search of values in the Constitution, regarding it instead as a set of annoying rules." (09/20/16)

Why movement conservatives are rooting for Hillary

"Obviously there is a deep schism in the Republican Party. It has been developing for years, and could be seen to some extent in earlier presidential cycles, but was opened fully and dramatically by the improbable candidacy of Donald Trump. Only one outcome in November would forestall a complete, likely irreversible fracturing: the election of Hillary Clinton. Thus, many elite Republican operators -- including lobbyists, elected officials, and pundits -- are desperately hoping that Trump loses." (09/19/16)

Trump’s economic fraud

White supremacist America: Trump and the “return” of right-wing hate culture

"Many of my friends from college and fellow academics in the last year are focusing their anxieties on the Donald Trump campaign. A common frustration voiced among intellectuals is the disbelief that a candidate as bigoted, pig-headed, and willfully ignorant as 'the Donald' could be running neck and neck with a seasoned political veteran like Hillary Clinton. This piece is not about Hillary Clinton, however. Rather, it's about promoting a much needed discussion of what Trump's rise really tells us. I don't believe we have a 'Donald Trump' problem in this country. The problem is much worse than that. More ominously, we have an American public problem that cuts to the very core of the quality of our democracy. Demagogues rise to power on the backs of workers, citizens, and your average 'Joe' or 'Jane.' They do not owe their success to their actions alone." (09/16/16)
