AZ: New law bans abortions based on race or gender

March 30, 2011
posted by

Arizona Republic

"Arizona is the first state in the nation to make sex- or race-selection abortions a crime. Gov. Jan Brewer on Tuesday signed into law House Bill 2443, which makes it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion based on the sex or race of the fetus. Opponents of the measure have questioned whether such a practice was really occurring." (03/30/11)

Authority! Authority!

"Imagine seeking eternal salvation by joining a church of your choice, but being required by the state to visit a 'religion help center' first; submitting to counselling by the state in order to ensure that your decision is 'voluntary' and 'informed,' and then waiting a minimum 72 hours after the counselling before you are allowed inside the church sanctuary." Fetal Defense Syndrome

Authority! Authority!
by Timothy J Taylor

"Anti-abortion forces are still hard at it in South Dakota. A proposed new law there would define a homicide as justifiable if committed in the defense of an unborn child. Opponents say the measure would provide a license to kill abortion providers, especially after language was added to the original bill extending the self defense justification to the pregnant woman’s relatives." GA: Anti-abortion law could kill women for miscarriages

February 27, 2011
posted by

Fox News

"A Georgia state representative has reintroduced an anti-abortion bill that would make miscarriages a felony if the mother cannot prove there was no 'human involvement.' The legislation from Rep. Bobby Franklin, a Republican, would make all abortions, described as 'prenatal murder,' illegal based on the belief that all life begins at conception. The bill's definition of 'prenatal murder' excludes miscarriages 'so long as there is no human involvement whatsoever' in causing them. Anyone convicted would face the death penalty or life behind bars." [editor's note: HUH? - SAT] (02/26/11)

OH: Abortion ban hinges on heartbeat

February 8, 2011
posted by

Fox News

"An unborn child's heartbeat can be detected as soon as 18 days after conception, and supporters of a bill slated to be unveiled in the Ohio Legislature Wednesday say that women should be prohibited from ending pregnancies beyond that milestone. State Rep. Lynn Wachtmann is planning to unveil the 'Heartbeat Bill' and a legislative aide for the Republican tells Fox News that 42 of the 99 representatives in the Ohio state House have signed on to the bill, which would make an exception to the heartbeat rule only in emergency medical situations." [editor's note: This is almost as ludicrous as the "moment of conception" boundary; in most cases, "18 days after conception" is still before the first missed period! - SAT] (02/08/11)

Ireland: Ruling likely to force a rewrite of abortion laws

December 19, 2010
posted by

Dallas Morning News

"Ireland, where it is virtually impossible to obtain a legal abortion, will probably have to rewrite its laws after a European court ruled Thursday that it had violated its own Constitution by failing to provide an abortion to a pregnant woman who had cancer. Ireland has one of Europe's most stringent anti-abortion laws, holding that abortion is illegal in every circumstance except where there is a 'real and substantial risk' to the life of the mother."
