The debacle of margarine’s utility

"Protectionism always requires an 'evil eye and an unequal hand' of the bureaucratic managers who are entrusted with economic regulation. More often than not, government regulators with good intentions trigger massive breakdowns within an all-inclusive market economy, leading to results that nobody desires — what Mises aptly termed 'planned chaos.' We can see some of the more insidious side effects of regulations that seem fair on the face and impartial in appearance by tracing the history of antimargarine laws in the United States."
