"Targeting gays is a tried-and-true way of shifting blame or changing the subject. ... And the Pentagon, in cahoots with Republican allies, successfully used homosexuality as the metal rod to ward off the lightning strike of reform at the end of the Cold War. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, and with it the rationale for the bloated US defense budget. ... The days of the overkill arsenal looked numbered. But the brass ... and the Republicans ... stopped the reform cold -- by throwing gay service members onto the tracks before Clinton’s train had even left the station." (09/26/11)
