"So, why didn’t Obama get something at least a bit better than what he got? Well, to whatever extent his preferences did differ from those of the House Republicans, they were in the less flexible negotiating stance, and they had less to lose. Most Representatives are in safe seats that are won or lost in primaries. Ideological purity matters most there, and we know where the Republican base stands on taxes and military spending. On the other hand, Presidents have to win swing states, and the incumbent President is always judged (rightly or wrongly) on the state of the economy." (07/31/11)
