"The phone hacking scandal last night claimed it most high-profile casualty when Sir Paul Stephenson, Britain's most senior police officer, resigned as the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, saying his position was in danger of being eclipsed by debate about his actions. ... The shock announcement came hours after former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks was arrested at a London police station on suspicion of conspiring to intercept voicemails and involvement in corrupt payments to police at around midday -- 72 hours after Rupert Murdoch caved in to growing political pressure and accepted her resignation."
