"Among other things, the War of 1812 and the Fort Dearborn Massacre were about defining US citizenship and American exceptionalism. That’s the problem with remembering the war. To remember the war and the Fort Dearborn Massacre is to point out how the narrative about US citizenship has changed over 200 years. Along with other progressives, Senator Durbin looks to a different narrative about US history, a narrative that dismisses American exceptionalism." (07/13/11)
