"Statewide political support is building for legislation that would let California counties pull out of a federal program that tracks down immigrants at local jails, but law enforcement officials remain divided. Immigrant advocates are pushing Gov. Jerry Brown and state legislators to join New York, Illinois and Massachusetts in dropping out of Secure Communities, arguing the federal-state partnership casts too wide a net. More than 3,900 Bay Area immigrants have been deported and thousands more detained through the Secure Communities program since local counties joined the federal network last year, according to government statistics."
