"NASA on Wednesday said it plans to launch the first unmanned US spacecraft to a deep space asteroid in 2016 to collect samples and return them to Earth for further study. Last year, Japan became the first nation to complete such a mission when its Hayabusa probe brought back dust following a seven-year trip to an asteroid 300 million kilometres (186 million miles) from Earth -- about twice as far as the sun."
