"After the flood [a year ago], thousands of Nashville residents took to the streets to help their neighbors, hauling away ruined drywall and handing out hot meals, praying and weeping with flood victims who lost homes and loved ones. They also opened their wallets. More than $29 million worth of donations were raised to help flood victims. ... The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee collected $14 million for flood relief, including more than $4 million from the Garth Brooks benefit concerts in December. ... Despite that good work, ... the Foundation still has millions of dollars unspent a year after the flood ... [which] prompted a new state law, passed last week, requiring charities to tell the secretary of state how they are spending flood donations." (05/08/11)
