"Thoreau’s philosophy of secession was based on the premise that an individual’s moral principles have the first claim on his or her actions, and that any government which requires violation of these principles has no legitimate authority whatsoever. One can only imagine what Thoreau would think of the United States today -- a nation which has lost its moral authority and is unsustainable, ungovernable, and unfixable." (04/19/11)
