"A string of dog poisonings in Colorado Springs’ Old North End could be the work of burglars who want to get rid of protective pets, a neighborhood association is warning its residents. ... The concerns began with a February incident in which a veterinarian told a homeowner on North Cascade Street that his 2 1/2-year-old black Labrador retriever had died after being fed rat poison. About a month later, burglars broke into the couple’s home and carefully picked through their jewelry — without having to deal with a barking dog."
