The narrowing legitimacy of the state

"I've long believed that the legitimacy of the state -- that is, the state as seen and judged by those it governs -- has been declining. But I've come to conclude that decline is not the right word, as we are not heading to an anti-state moment. Rather, the ability of the state to act and justify its actions is getting narrower. People are demanding as much of the state but becoming much harsher in their judgement of the state. And the state can no longer assume that because it acts, it can justify its actions merely because it's the state." (03/23/11)
