"A former Pennsylvania judge is scheduled to stand trial this week in one of the biggest courtroom scandals in U.S. history. Prosecutors say Mark Ciavarella (shiv-uh-REL'-uh) and a second former Luzerne County judge, Michael Conahan, took $2.8 million in kickbacks from the owner and builder of a pair of private youth detention facilities. ... Ciavarella vigorously denies the allegation that he sent children to the private jails in exchange for money." (02/06/11)
