"The United States Supreme Court has issued a temporary stay in the execution of Ronald Smith. Department of Corrections Spokesman Bob Horton said ADOC Commissioner Jeff Dunn received official notice from the higher court, stating it would need more time to review Smith's appeal and issue an order. ... Twenty one years ago a Madison County jury found Smith guilty of capital murder and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Two months later, the judge overrode their decision and gave him death. He is set to for execution at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. Alabama is the last state in the country that allows a judge to override a jury’s recommended sentence." (12/08/16)
