"Spain was under pressure Wednesday from its allies to refuse permission for Russian warships headed for the Syrian coast to refuel at one of its ports. Russia's request to allow its ships to stop on Spanish territory 'are under review' while Spain weighs input from its allies and Russian authorities, the foreign ministry said in an e-mail. The ministry said Russian ships have for years made stops in Spanish ports and that permission is granted on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the safety of local residents and the environment. ... NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed concern that the flotilla could take part in Syria air strikes." [editor's note: Has anyone called it to Stoltenberg's attention that HIS ships are taking part in Syria air strikes? - TLK] (10/26/16)
