The Founders’ Case for a Strong Militia Over Standing Armies

Source: Tenth Amendment Center
by Michael Boldin

“One of the primary reasons the founders wanted a strong militia system with a well-armed general public was to minimize or even eliminate the need for a large, permanent standing army, even in times of peace. Most people in the founding generation were extremely wary of standing armies. They were often referred to as ‘the bane of liberty.’ They knew this from experience. From the standing armies that led to the massacre in Boston, to the gun control scheme that kicked off the war for independence – they lived it firsthand. As colonial resistance to taxes and other policies grew in 1774, the British responded by attempting to disarm the colonists.” (04/25/24)

France: Air traffic control strikes ground flights across Europe

Source: Reuters

“Delays and flight cancellations were set to impact swathes of Europe on Thursday, after authorities failed to reach a deal with some French air traffic control workers to avert a strike. France’s DGAC civil aviation authority said on Wednesday it had asked airlines to cancel 75% of Thursday’s flights at Paris Orly airport, 55% of flights at Paris Charles-De-Gaulle and 65% of flights at Marseille. Air traffic control strikes in France frequently impact travel in Europe, limiting not only flights into France but also across the country’s airspace. Ryanair had warned it would have to cancel over 300 flights, including from Great Britain to Spain or to Italy, as a result of Thursday’s strikes, renewing pressure on European Union officials to place more pressure on France to limit the impact of the labour actions.” (04/25/24)

The Alarming Implications of Trump’s Immunity Claim

Source: Reason
by Jacob Sullum

“According to Trump, a president can avoid prosecution by leaving office before the Senate can convict him or by hiding his crimes well enough that they are not discovered until after he leaves office. And since the Impeachment Judgment Clause is not limited to presidents, it would seem, so could ‘all civil officers of the United States,’ contrary to the historical practice of prosecuting former federal officials who were never impeached. Although there is no textual basis for treating former presidents differently in this respect, Trump argues that protection of executive power demands special leniency for them. Otherwise, he warns, the threat of frivolous, politically motivated prosecutions would have a paralyzing impact on presidential decisions.” (04/24/24)

AZ: House votes to repeal 1864 abortion ban

Source: Arizona Republic

“The Arizona House on Wednesday narrowly voted to repeal a near-total abortion ban dating from 1864.
The 32-28 vote came after passionate speeches from Republicans, describing in graphic detail the abortion process as they argued for a ‘no’ vote. But with Republicans Matt Gress of Phoenix, Justin Wilmeth of Phoenix and Tim Dunn of Yuma joining with all 29 Democrats, House Bill 2677 passed.
Republican Rep. Barbara Parker said while critics of the 1864 law call it ‘archaic,’ it’s the repeal that thrusts Arizona back to prehistoric times and does not respect the life of unborn children. … The vote turns attention to the state Senate, which is poised to take up the matter next Wednesday, if there is agreement to bring it up for a vote. Republicans are still working on a possible referral, or referrals, that could put a competing abortion measure on the November ballot.” (04/24/24)

Cowardice, Not Courage, Led House Republicans to Side with the Democrats

Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Connor O’Keeffe

[T]he political establishment’s fantasy about controlling every inch of the globe needs to be put to rest, especially while parts of this country remain so unsafe and the situation at the border grows even more chaotic. Washington’s imperial ambitions cost a lot of money and create unnecessary enemies. It’s clear many Republican voters understand, at least at a high level, what needs to happen. Every Republican candidate claims to support spending cuts. And recently, Republicans have had to navigate their base growing more skeptical of Washington’s hyperactive foreign policy. And when FISA was due to be renewed, numerous Republicans worked to implement restrictions on warrantless surveillance. To their credit, some Republicans were serious enough to try to use their small House majority to make as big a dent in the above problems as possible. … But in the end, Mike Johnson and the so-called moderate Republicans gave in on all three fronts.” (04/24/24)

Spain: Sanchez halts public duties as wife faces inquiry

Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has suspended public duties to ‘stop and reflect’ on whether to remain in the job, after a court opened a preliminary inquiry into his wife. In a statement, the Spanish leader said he urgently needed to decide ‘whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honour.’ The court said it was responding to corruption claims against Begona Gomez. Mr Sanchez said he would make a decision on his future next Monday. His wife would defend her honour and work with the judiciary, he said, to make clear there was no substance to the allegations against her.” (04/25/24)

California’s fast food follies

Source: Orange County Register
by John Phillips

“On April 1st, California’s brand new $20-an-hour minimum wage for fast food workers took effect, and surprise surprise fast food chains are jacking up their menu prices across the board. According to data from Kalinowski Equity Research and cited in The New York Post, Wendy’s has hiked prices by roughly 8 percent, while Chipotle raised theirs by 7.5 percent, Starbucks went up by about 7 percent, Taco Bell by 3 percent, and Burger King increased theirs by 2 percent, the report found. What’s next? The McDonald’s drive-thru lane may have to start charging tolls. Burger King could offer free estimates. A lay-away plan at Wendy’s? Also, Wendy has an OnlyFans page now. Some franchises even raised their prices ahead of time, in anticipation of the new law. … I guess we should count our blessings. At least America wasn’t experiencing record-breaking inflation when all of this nonsense happened.” (04/23/24)

Biden signs war welfare / Internet censorship bill

Source: NDTV [India]

“US President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed legislation authorizing desperately needed military aid for Ukraine, saying Washington would begin sending new assistance to Kyiv within hours. The passage of the $95 billion package — which also includes aid for Israel and Taiwan and a measure to potentially ban TikTok in the United States — comes after months of delay that saw Ukrainian forces run short of ammunition and suffer battlefield setbacks. … The United States has been a key military backer of Ukraine, but Congress had not approved large-scale funding for Kyiv for nearly a year and a half, and the financing of the war has become a point of contention ahead of a presidential election in November.” (04/24/24)
