"Unionist politicians in [the British-occupied six counties of] Ireland vetoed a vote that would have allowed gay marriage after a majority in the territory's assembly approved the change on Monday. The assembly voted 53 to 51 in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage but the Democratic Unionist Party invoked a 'petition of concern' rule requiring separate majorities of both Unionists and Nationalists for the bill to pass."
