"An Egyptian court sentenced the country's most famous activist to five years in a maximum-security prison on Monday, in a verdict that lawyers described as a deterrent to anyone who wished to join Egypt's political opposition. Alaa Abdel Fattah, one of the 2011 uprising's most recognisable faces, was sentenced to five years in prison. Another 24 defendants received sentences ranging from three to five years. ... Fattah was a leading figure in the 2011 Arab Spring revolt that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak. He was first sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison for participating in an unsanctioned demonstration, before a retrial was ordered." (02/23/15)
