CA: Invasive weeds in Lake Tahoe spark legal fight between Sierra Club & agencies

Source: SFGate

“A long-running legal battle over stopping invasive aquatic weeds from spreading through Tahoe Keys, a man-made lagoon and wetlands system that feeds into Lake Tahoe, hit a turning point this week after a Superior Court judge halted a controversial weed-control project. Plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil, coontail and curly-leaf pondweed have plagued the Tahoe Keys lagoons for decades following the subdivision’s construction in the 1960s on top of what was once a large wetlands environment at the southern end of Lake Tahoe. The plants have since grown out of control and significantly impacted the 163 acres of waterways that make up the lagoon system. In 2019, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association began drafting a plan to use herbicides as a way to rid the lagoons of invasive weeds.” (05/05/24)

Bird Union Workers Tell Audubon Union Busting Won’t Fly

Source: In These Times
by Avalon Edwards & Thomas Birmingham

“It had been just two weeks since Emily Lark gave birth to her second child. Her partner, Eva Lark, was already at the office, getting back into the groove of their grueling 70-hour work week as a public programs manager. In the middle of the day, while bouncing from one Zoom call to the next, Eva received a phone call from Emily. Something was off. ‘I’m dizzy. I can’t catch my breath,’ said Emily. At first, she had chalked it up to residual stress in the aftermath of an intense pregnancy. But the dizziness and shortness of breath wouldn’t go away, and when Emily called Eva, she was scared. ’We need to go to the hospital now.’ At the hospital, Emily was promptly diagnosed with postpartum complications: preeclampsia, which, if untreated, can cause seizures, organ damage and high blood pressure.” (05/03/24)

Canada: Police charge three with murder of Sikh leader Nijjar, probe India link

Source: Reuters

“Canadian police on Friday arrested and charged three Indian men with the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year and said they were probing whether the men had ties to the Indian government. Nijjar, 45, was shot dead in June outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. A few months later, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cited evidence of Indian government involvement, prompting a diplomatic crisis with New Delhi. … Nijjar was a Canadian citizen campaigning for the creation of Khalistan, an independent Sikh homeland carved out of India.” (05/03/24)

Florida’s Faux-Meat Ban Slaughtered Free Enterprise

Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Paul Mueller

“The Florida legislature recently decided that, along with deregulating electric-vehicle charging stations and giving kids excused absences for 4-H and FFA activity, it would restrict the ‘manufacturing, distributing, holding, or offering’ of cultivated or ‘lab-grown’ meat in SB 1084. Several states with Republican majorities, such as Alabama, Arizona, and Tennessee, have considered similar legislation. While Governor DeSantis labeled cultivated meat part of a ‘whole ideological agenda,’ this provision has the fingerprints of powerful lobbies like the Florida Poultry Federation and the Florida Cattlemen’s Association all over it. These lobbies have an obvious economic interest: reducing potential competition. Restricting alternative products means they can charge consumers higher prices. But why would Florida legislators agree to ban cultivated meat? No evidence has yet been offered as to why the FDA and other existing regulatory oversight is insufficient.” (05/03/24)

US Senators moonlight as extortionists for foreign power

Source: Axios

“A bipartisan group of senators held a virtual meeting on Wednesday with senior officials at the International Criminal Court to express their concern about possible arrest warrants being issued for Israeli leaders over the war in Gaza, according to three sources who were in the meeting or briefed about it. Israeli officials have grown increasingly worried over the last two weeks that the ICC is preparing to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. … Republican lawmakers threatened to pass legislation against the ICC if it moves forward with the arrest warrants, which the Biden administration has said it opposes.” (05/02/24)

How Many Babies Are “Enough?”

Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“Using tax policy to influence how much beer people drink, what kind of cars people drive, or how many babies people have is just a way of imposing some people’s social preferences (and the costs of exercising those preferences) on other people. Americans, [Catherine] Rampell tells us (citing polling data), are ‘having fewer kids than they say they want.’ She doesn’t cite any polling data on how many kids those same people want to pay the costs of conceiving, delivering, and raising. I suspect the latter number would be lower. I want one more Tesla than I currently own (the latter number is zero), but I don’t want to pay the advertised sticker price. Nor do I support taxing you, or Ms. Rampell, more to buy me one (or to give me a tax credit to reduce my cost of buying one).” (05/02/24)

UK: Conservatives suffer big losses in local elections as Labour appears headed for power

Source: NBC News

“Britain’s governing Conservative Party is suffering heavy losses as an array of election results pour in Friday, piling pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ahead of a U.K. general election in which the main opposition Labour Party appears increasingly likely to return to power after 14 years. Labour won control of councils in England it hasn’t held for decades and was successful in a special by-election for Parliament that if repeated in a general election in coming months, would lead to one of the Conservative’s biggest-ever defeats. Its only negative for Labour has been in some areas with large Muslim populations, such as Oldham in northwest England, where the party’s candidates appear to have suffered as a result of leader Keir Starmer‘s strongly pro-Israel stance in the conflict in Gaza.” (05/02/24)

Stopping a Rogue Executive from Abusing the Massive Powers of the Presidency

Source: The UnPopulist
by Trevor Burrus

“We haven’t always had presidents with integrity. But that doesn’t capture the fundamental problem: each president who decides to push the limits of his or her power creates a new baseline for the misuse of the office by unprincipled actors. Woodrow Wilson used a variety of means to prosecute those who opposed America’s involvement in World War I. Franklin Roosevelt used an executive order to create concentration camps to imprison more than 100,000 people of Japanese ancestry. John F. Kennedy used the IRS and the FCC to shut down ‘right-wing’ radio broadcasters who he thought would be a threat to the country and his reelection. … Given what purportedly ‘good’ presidents have done with the office, it’s worth considering what a petty and vindictive president would do. Unfortunately, we may learn that lesson if Donald Trump returns to the office.” (05/02/24)
